in my 190e. the floormats are attached to some black cushion thing with molds . when i remove the mats, it exposes the metal part of the car. i dont know what its called but it has grooves that the cushion thing conforms to. did the previous owner cut a piece of the carpet or is this normal to the 84 190e's?

The color matched carpets have a waterproof padded backing that is clipped, snapped and glued to different parts of the interior. Underneath that you should be able to see the metal chassis and the plastic ducting for the wire looms and cables and also air ducts for the rear passengers feet.
