Hello, fellow MB-Drivers i have a question:
I will buy myself a StarDiagnosis System and i want to know if it also can do Analog Blink-Codes?

Reason is that i drive also a W124 500E and it has certain Modules, which can only be read out with blink-codes (SRS, ABS/ASR, AC, etc.). I have now read in a 500E Forums that Stardiagnosis can diagnose also these Analog Modules, so i wont need a LED Blink-Code reader.

Is this true?

Problem is, nowhere in the World you can buy a real genuine StarDiagnosis System. In Germany i asked Daimler AG about it and they claim that MB Shops could lease it for 300-500€/Month and thats it.

So i will buy the Chinese Copy called "Super MB Star C3", which according to my Month long researches is the one with the best Quality Hardware.(identical to Genuine StarDiagnosis of Daimler AG)
I came to this very Product beacuse there is a AT (Automatic Transmission)-Specialist shop near Frankfurt which uses this StarDiagnosis System from China without any issues since 2009. Even the (hacked) Software Xentry,DAS,EPC,WIS,etc is updated very frequently.

To make the long Story short: In the Chinese Auction offerings of this System they wrote down this line (red marked is of concern):
1.1989~up to now Car, Bus, Truck, Sprint, Smart .
2 .All electric system Diagnostic;(Do not include flash code)
3. Reading out and erasing trouble code;
4 .Reading the real-time data of sensor and actuator;
5.Testing the component of cars:coding and programming.

I would be interested knowing how did you conclude a specific product being a high quality one? Super MB Star C3 usually refers to the SW only and in any case, an average Chines shop advertises their products as the best one irrespectively if it is good or crap.

Are you only using the tool with the W124? I would consider even a low quality clone a bit of an overkill for that car. It would be able to read control units from that car but an SDS tool would mainly make sense if you have other cars to look after or plan to change to a more modern model some time in the future.

Hi,
I researched it, by reading countless of documents and comparisons of the parts.
What matters specifically on the old Compact3 Multiplexer is PCB Thickness, line thickness in PCB, cable thickness from Laptop to Multiplexer, if all Lines are fused, etc etc...
The Super MB Star 2011 features each of that and its NOT only a SW ;-)
Please do your research by Visiting the "pirates" Website at Super MB STAR Offical Website- Super MB STAR is the Best tools for Merceders Benz Diagnostic under the Download/Update Section you can see some Introduction Documents what this Set is and what its not.
If you then use some days/week of reading, researching, asking literally holes in the manufacturers and good shops of these parts, you'll have your answers.
Also when you check Alibaba.com what the Set/Unit Prices of various C3/C4 Multiplexer Kits are, you get your answer... Cheap ones over there sell for 1-2$ PER KIT!!! when you take a 1000 a month, the Supermbstar one still costed a couple of 100$ (Harddisk and PCMCIA/Express cards are included too) even if you take 1000 a month.

When we talk about the old C3 Based Star Diagnosis Systems, the one offered by Supermbstar offers the best quality in hardware and software (besides the Original one), im pretty convicned currently after my researchs. Hacked MB Software in Dev-Mode is Superb too.
One pretty good Shop (UOBD2.com) even has the new SD4 (Wireless, connects to Canbus directly, etc etc) clone of the most actual SDS Multiplexer,m but for me this is to risky since this clone is new on the market. Price is also pretty high.

I want to buy it for my C36AMG and my W124 500E primarily...
Currently i use a MT2500 Snap-On but this can't connect to my C36AMG, since the cartridge can only connect to US C36AMG which all used Bosch ME Injection, while German ones used Bosch HFM. So i'll sell the MT2500 Kit again and use only SDS in furture - it is way way way way way way more Powerfull already, etc. Live-Data, Self-Adaption Resets and WIS Wireing Diagrams with locations finders included are Superb and something i can only dream-off right now.

A friend of mine also has a "free" mechanic-shop for all car brands, but mostly does "older" Mercedes so this SDS-Clone will kind of help him too. So far he has to drive broken Mercedes cars often to a MB-Shop and uses their SDS Service for around 100-150€ per car on average.

Sorry but I guess my question was not clear. I did not ask help for finding a good tool (if I had asked, I would not have been happy with a response saying "search for documents and study for months"), I wanted to be sure you have made your homework before you purchase a tool.

I think your description about a good tool is too complicated. Once you know how the original C3 tool looks like and how it is built, you only need to find a clone that is essentially the same.

I wish you luck with your tool selection. Would be nice to see some photos of the mux circuit boards once you have the tool at home, we can see then if it is a good product. The photos at their website give zero info about the actual tool quality (does not mean it would be crap).

Short version: using DAS, how can I back up the Engine control firmware to the hard drive, before starting a potentially bad firmware update to the ECU?

Long version:

I'm not sure if this is worth a new topic and it is related to DAS after all, so here goes.

I managed to get hold of a Chinese C3 Star clone, at least temporarily. I want to use it to the fullest for my little smart ForTwo CDI from 2001. I know people don't think of it as a _real_ Mercedes, but please don't kick me out, I can't find my answers from local "experts" (or they won't tell) and it seems you people know a thing or two about DAS.

After using DAS for quick and not so quick diagnostics on the car, mainly just looking, but also re-training the automatic transmission, I got to the Engine control software page, which says about the car's software (presumably, the engine ECU firmware):

Current 0002527008
New 0018164001

and asks whether I want to update it (would take approximately three minutes). The laptop was connected to the Internet, but I think DAS already had all Mercedes updates on the hard drive, up to 5.2011, its version date. Also, I had DAS identify the car by itself, so the update should be right for this car.

Thank you.

Edit: I obviously checked on smart forums as well, but to no avail.

Doesn't DAS contain a help function?
Can you tell me more about your Chinese C3? Where you bought it, how it is called exactly and what Software was delivered with it?

Other than that, real SDS knowledge is scarse throughout the Internet... Its kept secret as the majority of SDS owners want to earn money with that tool.

Isn't ECU-Update also called "SCN-Coding"? The good chinese copies offer Offline-SCN coding of ECUs as far as i've read...
Maybe im totally wrong here though.

The whole package, hardware+software, was bought from dhgate.com. Off topic, make sure a Chinese seller understands exactly what you want and for how much. Product descriptions, prices, deadlines do not necessarily materialize. It was adventurous, but I managed to buy it and I get to use it for free, from time to time.

Precisely because it's a replica, I prefer to have a backup, in case the new program fails. I looked around in the menus, but couldn't find anything similar, only extraction of some parameters. Will look deeper.

Off topic again, it's mechanically reliable hardware (did not open it up), a great software but a very slow copy, runs off an external drive, in a virtual Windows XP. The instructions DAS gives are nicely put together, with symptom checking, step by step guides for what to check/fix, good photos etc. I did not try everything installed on the drive (60GB?, which is a little OS and a lot of DAS). It has an icon called DAS and that's what I used. It's interesting to hear a transmission adaptation, or to start the car from the laptop (of course I tried these).

Yes it runs from a virtual machine VMWare with WinXP, like basically all the China-Clones WITH Software bundled.
The Virtual Machines are slow as long as your Laptop Hardware doesn't support Hardware Virtualization.
Thats why i bought a IBM/Lenovo T61 laptop with Core2Duo T7300 instead of the recommend old IBM Thinkpad T30.

The Super MB Star (Top Version) i ordered, comes with a 120GB SATA external drive, The Software is unlocked in Developer/Engineer Mode, so you can code things offline (SCN). It is the most "complete" package listed from all SDS Copies i could find.

I would be a bit worried with your clone, it looks the cables are rather "thin", especially the Serial one to the multiplexer. Also are the cables fused so you won't have to worry about frying your ECU?

There is a german company which offers Geniuine SDS repairs. They had listed examples of bad/non long-lasting C3 copies, which also had such rather thin cables. Those were according to them the major reasons for fried Multiplexers/ECUs, besides too thin lines on the (too thin layered) PCBs.

Do you have a newer car, like W212 or W221, or W204 with which you can test your Version? There was said that the bad quality ones can't suffcient enough keep the connections stable to those newer cars from MB (maybe because of higher data throughput?).

Anyway, if it works for your car without problems its great.

This shop is obviously cheating. Like the product description says "2.With a 7 meter RS232-RS485 cable, provide more convenience to garage when diagnose." The cable has no RS232 to RS485 converter (have a look at the box in the cable, it is empty).

Which laptop are you using? Does it have a USB2.0 interface? Difficult to interpret how slow your SW actually is but if you run it on a laptop that only has a USB1.1 interface, it will definitely be very slow. You could purchase a USB2.0 PCMCIA adapter to make it faster. Of course an old laptop does not run virtual machine very fast anyway.

An IBM T30 with a 2GH+ CPU and 1 to 2 GB of RAM isn't bad actually as long as you don't try to run a virtual machine on it. The T30 is often recommended because sellers have hard drives with native XP installed.

I doubt one can find a shop that sells SW without Xentry, that is support for later cars (212 etc, 221 is diagnosed via DAS and 204 can be done via both). SW is hardly a factor when one buys a tool and SW can be managed afterwards (not all purchase SW at all with the tool).

Sounds like you yourself have ordered a high quality clone but like you say, the one from the link in the previous post is not one of the high quality tools. The most obvious indication is the mux itself, have a look at the side of the mux with the green power on LED and compare it with yours once you get the tool. The cheap tools actually most often work pretty much like the more expensive ones, as long as they work. This is the problem, they tend to fail often.

Off-line SCN coding can be activated to any unit. Off-line programming too. The sellers tend to forget to say off-line SCN coding capability does not help much because these days you cannot order the off-line code any more.

I use an x40 Thinkpad with docking station, which has a serial port. I guess it's slow because the 1.2 GHz single core first generation Centrino CPU, but mostly because of the slow external hard drive - the LED is on most of the time. It has USB 2.0 and works fine.

I could use an x300 Thinkpad, which is faster, but does not have a serial port and, as far as I have read, the multiplexer does not work well with USB to serial adapters.

The serial cable is obviously not seven meters long, but it works (knock on wood). I don't know about the RS232-485 adapter, it was not needed (yet).

The C3 I'm using does have a green LED on the side. I'm not sure what it should look like.

I hope the multiplexer will work for some time.

Previously I wrote: "have a look at the side of the mux with the green power on LED...". The point is not the green led but the detail missing next to the green LED.

Of course I also hope your mux lives long, some do, but many don't.

I received mine and it works Perfect on all my cars!
Wow amazing tool... Free in Dev Mode, you need NO SCN codes for coding, etc.

Even Diagnosed a friends brand-new W221 with it - flawlessly.

Only the cables are very stiff (due to their thickness), which is sometimes anyoing when you sit in the car for live-data during drives.

Still a few issues - how can i change SDFinder with these wiring diagrams to german? Its currently set-up to english.
I already changed the HHTWIN to German by editing the hhtwin.ini
