Dear all,

Really needed your inputs and help. I was unable to start the engine today. The smart key didn't have the "zip" sound when I plug in the key. Do you know what's wrong with it?

Cheers,
Adam

First question is what model is the car and will the remote lock and unlock the doors OK? Second question is will the key turn in the ignition lock? Third does it go to the start position?

Hi eric242340,

Thanks for your reply.

1. My car is a 1999 Mercedes E55 AMG and the remote can still unlock and lock the doors.

2. The key will not turn the ignition lock

3. Does not go to the start position.

Thank you for your kind attention. Look forward to your reply soon.

Best regards,
Adam

Oh dear here we go again. Key wont turn. I would first check the basics and give the tranny lever a good smack to make sure it is in the parked position. Also try moving the steering wheel whilst trying to turn the key. Ensure the park brake is on.
Next move is to change the batteries in the key and if this fails then it looks like a DAS problem (Drive Authorization System) and this can only be checked with Star Diagnostics:mad: Sorry I cant be of much help if it is the DAS:eek:

Hi eric242340,

I guess its the Drive Authorization System. Do you know if its expensive and feasible to call the local Mercedes dealer to come to my home to fix it? I can't start the car and drive it at all.

Cheers,
Adam

As I see it, you have 2 options: Flatbed the car to the dealer (better than towing it in my opinion) or calling them for roadside assistance using 1-800-FOR-MERC.

I have read on here that to have them come to your location (house or wherever) to replace your battery costs no more than taking it in to them.

Good Luck!

I just got my car flatbed to the dealer today. Needed their Roadside assistance too as my car is parked in a tight spot. Needed an MB technician to unlock the gearbox and push the car out. The estimate was about $1,300 Euros, a bit higher than an outside mechanic at $1,100 Euro. But the outside mechanic told me I have to wait for the part for 10 weeks, while MB might be able to get my car back on the road in a week or less. So I chose the MB dealer.

Cheers,
Adam

Dear all,

The MB dealer got back to me and had to replace 2 parts:

1) Electronic Ignition Switch

2) Steering lock

The total comes to a bit more than US$2,000. Will be get my car back onto the road by next Monday the latest.

Cheers,
Adam

Wow, you don't have a warranty Adam? Hope everything comes out ok.

Makes me glad I got the warranty on mine. Already used the warranty to fix the cluster.
