We have a 411 and are new to Unimogs and no access to a manual. We are able to move the Hi/Low lever back and forth but it apparently by the foward speed does not engage Hi. Are we missing something completely stupid? We bought the truck from a guy that did not use it for he said three years and he knew next to nothing about it. Thanks in advance Ed

hmmmmm... what year?

Older ones with same tranny as a 404 have no High Low lever unless an add on crawler box has been added to the bottom of the tranny*.

First and second is considered Low. 3-6th is considered high.

What lever are you saying is a high low lever? Can you take a picture for us and attach it in this thread?

*On rare occasion there maybe a high low lever ..... but only if the tranny shift plate was modified and a lever was added. This gives low 4 gears, fwd and rev. And a high 4 gears.

You'll have to clarify what lever your actually shifting here. There are two options that you may have, either a crawler box bolted to the bottom of the transmission or a cascade box that is bolted to the front. The crawler box has a stubby lever tucked under the end of the main shifter, I've never seen how the cascade box is shifted.

A picture would be nice if possible.

It is a 1960 411 in South America. The gear shift only moves in a straight line and looks to me that it should move left or right but it does not. I was told by someone who drove a Unimog in the past here that the center lever was the Hi/Low obviously wrong. Can someone please clue me in as to wh at each lever does and how to properly shift gears. Much appreciated. I dont know how to post a photo to this site of the shift levers but if someone could help post I could email the photo, Thanks Ed [email protected]

The..... what lever does what question is not uncommon and has been discussed and pictures provided on several ocassions. I may be wrong but I think the 411 functions same was as a 404 so do a search for either.

Some possible terms to something by

404 shift lever*
411 shift lever*

404 lever*
411 lever*

404 lever* "what is"
411 lever* "what is"

Others might suggest different searches

I think the photo uploaded correctly. If so can someone describe what each lever does and how to shift from 1st gear to 6th gear. i sound like an idiot but if you have never seen one before it is not always obvious. Thank you Ed,

yep, pretty much same as a 404. Do a search. Your answers are already in here.

George is correct.

I suspect you think the PTO lever is high/low. The 411 only has 6 speeds, no high/low unless you have a crawler or cascade box.

Trust me, you're not an idiot. When someone looks at the gear shifts in my 416, they're all like "WTF?"

My 416 has a 2x4 transmission.

Here's a shift plate from a 404. From left to right

1. Diff locks
2. PTO
3. 6 speed (1-2 low, 3-6 road gears) Most people start out in 3 gear if I'm not mistaken, something about hard time shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Reverse only uses 1-2 and not 3-6.
4. Forward - Reverse

I've labeled what I think your gear shifts should be. Not sure if the first one is your parking brake like coach says or it's the diff locks? I don't know much about 404/411 transmissions.

No doubt you have a 6 speed transmission that shifts just like a 404.

When you drive it, do you go really slow? Do you go in reverse if you shift it into reverse (far right side shifter)?

Looking at the picture, best guess is the transmission is in 1-2. and would only go forward and back as you described. I think the reverse lever is in reverse, and in reverse you cannot shift the main transmission into 3-4-5-6.

Shift the forward reverse lever into forward (forward position). Be sure the main shifter is in neutral. From this neutral position, bump the shift lever to the right. It might take a good bump, but don't use much strength to try to move it. Inertia and velocity works best.

If the shifter moves, it is going toward the 3-4-5-6 gear side of the pattern. If it goes far enough to reach another stop position, it will then go into 3rd gear (a lockout keeps it from going into 4th).

Does that help?

Bob

Thanks to all who offered good advice. I got it to shift into the higher gears. I did not know that you have to tap the gear shift lever to go into the higher gears. I will post some photos when I get the fuel tank back from being repaired. it is no looker but it is intended to work on the farm in Uruguay, South America. There are areas on the farm that I cannot go with my 4X4 and we will see how this Unimog does. Ed
