Being in South Florida I run the a/c all the time but there are points where it would be nice to just have the fan running and not the a/c but if I turn off the a/c it also turns off the fan. Guess this is normal but is there a way to just run the fan when I have the top down or just to vent the car? Read the original manual but no mention that I can find on this.

I don't think our cars have this functionality. It's either both on or both off. You cant even drive and have outside air flow in with both off like a modern car would

My 1998 SL500 has an Economy button (EC) and it allows the air circulation to run without the compressor being on. I'm seriously familiar with the EC setting when I was trying to get the compressor to run when the EC light wouldn't turn off. I finally was able to program it and get the compressor to run so I could refill the system.

Yes, you can press the EC button and it will not engage the compressor. Here’s a page from my 1993 manual.
