my wheel is old. foam is rough, picked off in some areas. I see newer models in the junkyard w good steering wheels and I have wondered what model's wheels will fit...plug n play.
I understand in 1977 there were no airbags or wheels w buttons except for the horn.
Up to what year can I be confident about being able to press on another wheel?
Im open to other models if the wheel is the same.

thanks again

I just installed a Gen 1 W126 steering wheel on mine. 190E steering wheels look the same but are smaller in diameter, which is nice.

Replacing an old wheel with a new/like new piece is a great way to freshen up the interior and driveability of these cars. I've replaced both of my w123 wheels; can't stand that squishy sticky spongey mess.

you can even get these wheels in leather or leather and wood (to match your interior) if you search ebay.de (easier if you can read German, but most browsers will translate for you). I took a leather wheel out of a later MB and put it in mine. I did have to use the later SRS hornpad, but the smaller diameter leather wheel feels great!

I've seen w123/early w126 wheels wrapped in leather, but I only found one for sale in a few years and didn't want to spend the $$$. Never did figure out if it was an OEM job or aftermarket. Sure looked like the real deal.

they take oem wheels and add the leather and/or wood. They end up looking like oem. Generally very professional operations. I've heard of a place in Michigan you can send your wheel to and they will do whatever you want to it, but I forget what the name of that company is.

GTK. They do look nice and OE.

To the OP: I'll send you an "ok" wheel for the cost of shipping. It's worn smooth, has small cracks where the spokes meet the wheel, and is a little spongy. It's the original to my wagon and taking up valuable SoCal storage space. It doesn't get sticky in the heat though like the wheel I took off of the 240D.

SD,

hope youre still in the Benzworld Loop! i have an 84 300D that I want to downsize (upgrade) the steering wheel. I understand 77-85 W126 wheels work and dont have airbags. What about 190D/E? Which Year model?

Junk yards ask a premium price for wheels with air bags which I dont need. Will the airbag model mount rightup?

Hope you can help me get a smaller, sportier wheel. thanks
