I'm looking for a used transmission to put in my 1999 AWD wagon. I've found a few - but the 2000s are more numerous and affordable (and they have the replacement to the trouble prone bushing from the posts I've read). Will a 2000 transmission fit a 1999?

The transmission on the 4Matic is different from the RWD for your model.

Also the valve body in the transmission has to match a particular software version of the ETC. While the software in the ETC can be updated, the version cannot be.

An example would be the touchshift feature. You may say you do not care about that feature. However, that feature requires different different hardware/software to implement so it might cause problems on you older model.

So unless you hear from someone who actually have done this exact same thing, I would suggest you stick with your same model. As a matter of fact, try to stay as close to your production date or serial number because MB sometimes changes things during the same model year.

Some reputable transmission re-builders install updated parts (such as better shaft bearing) during the rebuild.
