Tomorrow, wed, is the day all parts should be in and we putting her back together so I will let you know how it goes I will post this next question on the w208 forum but just in case you know the answer, we have found a leak on one of the 4 seals on the inside of rocker cover that seal around the sparkplug holders/mounts whatever you might call them We have taken old ones out, but any ideas or tips to get new ones in???

Hi Julie - this it what you do.. (see how useful this 'all model' WIS is?)

I have no idea what the material is that your seal is made of. A type of tough neoprene? Why not replace all of them while you are in there.

By the way, a 'drift' is a tool made of something not so 'hard' that it would damage the item it is being placed against during the hammering. In this case, a small block of wood might do the trick.

Obviously take great care - you dont want junk dropping down here.

Correct, but a drift (the original meaning) is made of copper or brass. Please do not use wood.

I was trying to think of something non-metallic that would not damage the new seal during installation. Obviously M-B have an expensive special tool for this job, which is quoted in the WIS.

Would you lubricate the seal to help it on its way?

A little oil around the edge will not go amiss, also try to find something about the same size of the seal, an old bearing or like and place it over the seal. Then tap the seal in using this, in place of an expensive MB special tool.

Thanks for all the advice, have only just read it after we , well my dad, has done the job. My dad guessed there must be a special tool so he had a friend make one out of a core drill. They cut the jagged edge off, smoothed it down and hey presto it fitted the seal perfectly and tapped them in, all 4 done As you all probably know but in case anyone reads this looking for advice you need a tool/pipe thats inside circumferance fits on the seal and the outside circumferance fits into the slight lip on the seal, dont know if i have explained that very well and obviously if you make one like my dad, make sure its smooth so as not to damage the seal

starter line modification and wiring harness

Just to keep you updated on the progress and to let you know keyhole, I have the wis, wow, took some installing, now all i need to do is learn the correct terms for things so i can locate them on the wis, ie the seals dad put in today, could i find anything relating to that, no! but clesrly there is because you posted pages from it
Anyway that side is completed, have the starter line wire modification part, we have been advised to check the secondary air intake valve, apparently its very prone to blocking?
So tommorrow dad is going to look at that, have also been told we need to change the harness, got quote today from a local indie, £370 +vat plus 4 hrs labour.
My husband is an electrician of sorts and he seems to think he may,( well he is going to have a look,)be able to just replace the affected wire that comes from camshaft connector and leads to the ecu we presume, as we cant see how every wire in the wiring loom/harness could be affected, but as you can gather with the progress so far we are no mechanics You may think im crazy or just being very tight but i am so frustated about this problem because as i have said before i really feel this should have been a call back. I am in the process of writing to our mercedes head office so if anyone is interested I will let you know how I get on??

So has anyone out there tried to replace just the one wire or do i have to bite the bullet and change the whole thing or could i possibly not have to do either, just fit this mod part??

Can anyone help me with a similar problem? Anyone?

About 2 months ago, the "engine check" came on and the car started running strange. It wouldn't start correctly, sometimes not at all. The engine would turn but not turn over. So I purchased a code machine, in hopes of finding out what was wrong, the cheap way. It came up with a "throttle position sensor" and a "camshaft position sensor". I took it to benz, they claimed it was not the throttle position sensor but just the camshaft position sensor. After finding out the cost, I purchased it online and took it to pepboys. They fix it, runs okay but now starts to rev certain times and other times there wouldn't be enough gas it seemed and the car would rev too low, but not die, just start shaking at a very, very low idle. Not to mention, the camshaft position sensor is still on when I use the code machine. Anyway, I bring it back to benz, this time they claim it's the "air flow mass sensor". Fine, brought it home, ordered the part online and did it myself this time (they wanted $700 or so, I did it for $55 plus a set of polygonal tamper proof wrenches. I read in this post that a cheap one will cause problems. Is that true? Should I have bought one from another place, NOT EBAY? I got mine on EBAY.) Now, the engine light goes off, BUT it still is idling strangly. So here I am, 2 sensors fixed (camshaft position sensor and MAF) and now I'm thinking it's the oxygen sensors. By the way, the "check engine" light was off for about 5 days, then it came back on. Did I hurt the new "air mass sensor" by not fixing the oxygen sensors I wonder? Or is it even the oxygen sensors? When I hook up that machine, I get a bunch of code readings, all the same for the most part. They read:

bank 1 and 2 too rich and too lean.

For the most part, I have the same symptoms as you, I changed the MAF and it still runs poorly. It doesn't die but revs high and low at times, sometimes making the car lunge forward, other times and mostly making it idle to the point of stalling, although it doesn't stall- just shakes a bit until I give it gas again. Does this seem familiar? Thanks!

Are you sure that you have got the plastic engine cover on properly?

I have read that when re-fitting , unless you bang your fist down on the cover at the bulkhead end - to ensure that the air intake hole is completely seated - that is the exact code you will get.

I have seen the M-B techs at my local dealership do this trick, and clearly for a good reason. Maybe a light touch of lubricant around the rim would help.

Anyway, it's worth considering...:thumbsup:

Some of your symptoms sound similar to what I had, but you dont say if you have oil in any of the places where it should not be, ie the breather system or in the connector on the front of the camshaft?? If you do have oil here then i would suggest following all the advice given to me in this post because my car is running like a dream!! My engine check light is still on but thats because i have not had the error code cleared yet( wanted to be sure all problems solved first) but this is booked in to be done
