A buddy of mine has to engage his starter 3 times to start 99 ML320. It always starts on the 3rd try.

Dealer said it is a camshaft position sensor.

I heard there are 4 camshaft sensors on this car. Is this correct? If so will a s scan tool identify which sensor is not sending a good signal? Or will we basically have to keep swapping in the new sensor until we find the bad one?

Or is it possible this is a crankshaft position sensor? Although my experience with crankshaft (and camshaft sensors for that matter) is that once they fail the car wont run.

Any help ideas are appreciated.

Actually, the crankshaft position sensor will cause the truck to try cranking but just not start... Feels like the engine isn't getting fuel. This can intermittently rear it's ugly head when the truck is hot, and then go away when the truck cools down again.

You may get more info if you post this in the w163 forum.
