Which North American M116/M117 camshafts are compatible with which engines? I understand the early mechanical lifter cams might have a longer duration and less lift than the cams used with hydraulic lifters.

In other words, can I pull a 4.2, 4.5, 5.0, or 5.6L cam and use it in my 3.8 as long as it has hydraulic lifters? I'm in desperate need of a passengers side cam and I need to confirm compatibility.

Why don't you post your VIN and the donor's VIN? We'll look it up in EPC and tell you.

I can tell you that the 420SEL and the 560SEL have different cams. IF the 560SEC engines are the same with 560SELs, then that would extend accordingly.

I haven't found a donor car yet, which is why I'm asking the question. I'm trying to broaden my searches to as many compatible cars as I can. Parts W126s are extremely rare in the NYC area.

I'm dealing within the US only, so this is only applying to US cars.

A rephrased question:

What cams from other US model engines will work in my 380SE besides cams from another 380SE?

I looked up your part and found this:
Part Number: 116-051-63-01
Part Notes: 3.8l. Right.; 8 CYLINDER, 3.8L, 4.2L, 5.0L, 5.6L.
Then I looked up several others in that list and none of them came up with the same part number, so, it looks like your universe is very limited.

Found some more cross references and it looks like you're limited to 84 and 85 380SE and 380 SL's

The "good" news is, it's available new for less than $460...

Thanks for looking that up. I can't throw that sort of money at a camshaft right now, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for any 84-85 3.8L Benzes. I'm guessing the cam changed when they went from the single row sprockets to the dual row. Shame on you Mercedes engineers...
