Yesterday, I read the post from Jammer about his 300SE turning 200K. Thought it would be of interesting to hear from these mileage champions with regard to their maintenance schedule. It is obvious that must of the forum members take very good to excellent care of their cars.

Please answer the following questions and add any additional information you think appropriate:

1) What oil changel interval do you follow, 3K, 5K, 7K, 10, other?
2) What type of oil do you use dyno, synthetic, synthetic blend?
3) What brand of oil do you use most often?
4) Do you use oil additives, Slick50, other?
5) Do you replace the oil filter everytime you replace the oil?
6) What trans. oil change interval do you follow?
7) Spark plugs change interval, and brand/type (for example: Bosch/Cooper,)?
8) Ignition caps + rotors change interval?
9) Ignition wires change interval?
10) Air filter change interval?
11) Power Steering fuel change interval?
12) Radiator fluid change interval?
13) What grade fuel do you use, regular-87, intermediate-89, premium-92/93?
14) In general, how often you wash/wax your car?
15) Condition of you car's paint?
16) Major repairs to date?
17) Anything else you would like to share?

I love my 89 300SE. It is a daily driver. It now has 51K and I would like to make it last forever.

My 1985 500SEL has over 280,000 miles on it

I change the oil every 3000 miles with Chevron Supreme 10-40
Never use any kind of additives
Change oil filter every oil change (foolish not to)

Trans service @ around every 100,000 miles, Original tans never any problems

Spark plugs, Cap, Rotor, and Wires about every 100,000 miles

Air filter, whenever it looks a little dirty

removed filter from power steering pump and never service

Changed coolant when I replaced radiator about 100,000 miles ago

Regular gas, used to use premium but the car is old now and I don't care

Wash regularly wax once in a while. Painted car 2 times first time hood was starting to fade, second time got a scratch from minor accident

Only repairs Fuel pump, Water pump, Radiator, valve seals

Secret to longevity in an engine
#1 NEVER NEVER overheat it. If a hose brakes pull over and stop immediatly, call a tow truck. Don't try to make it home or wherever...

#2 Change the oil regularly

By the way I just had it smogged and it is only putting out 1/4 of what is allowed
Runs strong and is still very reliable...

I have almost as many miles on my 85 500 SEL and follow pretty much the same schedule as rudedude except the fuel filter, air filter, plugs, cap/rotor, those get changed every 30,000 miles. The PS fluid and filter, the ATF and filter are changed every 36,000 with Valvoline ATF and an OEM filter - the same for the coolant using the MB stuff with new hoses. I usually don't let the belts go over 50,000 miles.

I use Castrol 20w 50 and fortunately I can use it year round. I also replace the filter, usually a Hengst or Mann, every 3000 miles. No additives, either.

Diff oil is changed every 100,000 miles along with the t chain and guides. I change the brake pads once a year and replace the brake fluid, the pads are about half worn when I replace them.

I also have the original transmission and engine and the only failure I've had is a ruptured transmission coolant line. These cars respond well to this kind of PM.

My '91 420SEL has 144K miles. I drive it about 10K a year, mostly on weekends. I am not a DIY. I give the car to a Mercedes specialist mechanic 3 times a year for service. I tell him to do whatever the car needs. Usually oil change and new filters. Last time, new belts, water pump, brake pads, rotors and front discs. Time before that, new radiator. Timing chain replaced at 130K. I detail the car myself.

My car just passed the 141K miles. I have the oil changed every 3000 to 4000 miles, depending on how busy or tire I am. Right now my car has some issue with the steering wheel, it has some play on it and cannot get the alignment done correctly. :(

My 300SD has 244,000 indicated miles. I change the oil every 3k, use Shell Rotella diesel rated 15w40 oil. New air filter every October. Trans fluid service each March, alternating PS and brake fluid changes at same time, every other year (brake-PS-brake-PS, one or the other gets done each yr). Diff oil will be changed when I change to a 2.47 diff. Waxed thrice a year. Paint is good apart from a few clearcoat spots at rear of roof. Valves are adjusted every 15,000 miles. I intend to drive this 126 for as long as humanly possible, I'm not ruling out an engine rebuild or repaint in the future...

I have a 1990 300se. 207,000 miles, passed over 200,000 about three months ago. I've had the car for about 35,000 miles.

I change the oil every 3000 miles. Dino oil.

I go between Valvoline, Castrol, and Chevron.

Never use ANY additives.

Always replace with an OEM filter.

Spark plugs once a year. Bosch H9DC0

Cap and Rotor every two years.

Wires, twice in three years (just changed yesterday).

Antifreeze every two years using MB antifreeze, but I've changed antifreeze about five times. Every time I have to drain it, only new stuff goes in. I'm anal.

Power streering fluid, once every two years.

Wash car once or twice a week. Wax, too much.

Brake fluid, every time I do a brake job. So about once a year.

Transmission fluid, I do it about once a month now because my tranny is almost dead and I need it to work just a little longer until I can take a week off work to rebuild it. You should do it every 30,000 miles. But it's cheap and easy to do, so I'd recommend once a year. Remember to change the filter as well.

Differential, once every two years.

ALWAYS use premium gas.

Air filter, once a year.

DO NOT neglect any maintanence. It will come back to haunt you. I suspect the previous owner wasn't the best with maintanence (although he did use a VERY good indy), and I'm paying the price for it.

I don't think the tranny fluid was changed in quite a long time. First time I did it, it was burned and had a bit of black silt (clutch packs). Now, the transmission is barely working.

Same thing with antifreeze. Recently had to replace thermostat, water pump, belt tensioner, and all belts and hoses. The water pump is a major PITA on the m103. I'd rather replace the head gasket.

im going to have to say the same thing. my 560sel has 185000 on it to date. the only difference for me is i have yet to repaint the car and i would replace the coolant and brake fluid every two years, i cant remember any major repairs (car was owned by my father originally and i just received it a few years ago) but i am planning on restoring the engine (head gasket repair, timing chain work, getting block helicoiled). also i STILL PUT PREMIUM IN! COME ON MAN ITS A BENZ!

My '91 560 SEC has over 150,000 mi. Oil changed every 3k mi. with new OE filter. Use Mobile 1 synthetic.
Major repairs in the three and a half years I've owned it include in no particular chronological order: Front end rebuilt, valve seals, injector seals, plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, alternator, fuel accumulator, fuel pump check valves, power steering hoses, brakes front and rear, transmission, torque convertor, flex discs. I think the heat here in Florida takes a toll.
Changes: Clear corner lamps. Catalytic convertor off. Just put on 17" 3pc. AMG wheels with 245/45/17 94w tires this week.
Always use premium.

Before the SEC, I had an '82 300SD for almost 17 years. Same oil change intervals and brand. Repairs: a/c system conversion, brakes, tires, one battery, transmission, tach sending unit, air, oil and fuel filters. Sorry that I sold it... but had lusted for a coupe for a long time and was blinded by its looks and performance. Oh, and it only had 110,000 on it when sold.

Here's my go at this....

1. I change oil/filter every 3000 miles, regardless.
2. I use regular Castrol GTX 10w-40 for Desert conditions.
3. Brand? See above.
4. I substitute one quart of Marvel Mystery oil for one quart of oil, almost every oil change.
5. Yes, replace filter with EVERY oil change.
6. Right now, I'm on a trans. interval of every 40K miles.
7-9. I regulary check (monthly) all the ignition components on all my cars. I replace when necessary.
10. I have a K&N filter which gets checked every oil change, but has only been cleaned/re-oiled probably every 10k-15k miles.
11. Power steering fluid changed a few months ago. No interval.
12. Coolant changed a few months ago. I try to change every two years.
13. Premium unleaded only! Sometimes I add a few ounces of Marvel's to the mixture to keep injectors and the fuel system clean.
14. Even though I live in the desert, the car is garaged. So I don't wash and wax too often.
15. Paint condition, I'd say, is pretty damn good.
16. No major repairs.
17. These are well-engineered, finely-constructed machines. I enjoy working on them whenever I do so. :)

Hope you get a little info out of my input.

15. Original Black paint... excellent paint.. even in the desert.. its all about the wax
16. timing chain and tensoner and upper rails.. took 2hrs. cost $150. radiator. Damn sunroof rails... just a pain but not hard to fix. just fixed it today.. cost 189 bucks for one rail. Soon to doo, complete front suspension replacment..

17. And to add... these cars are some of the best built cars around, my car is an 89 420sel black on black and has now 186k I have put more than 20k miles in 6months. Flawless ride. I have owned more cars than most dealers sell, and this is the best car i have ever owned.. I can't stand todays cars.. there cheap and low quality compared to a almost 20 year old car. crazy..

Its all about the maintance treat it good and it will never let you down. I drive my car hard, i use the gas pedal like it's meant to be... on the floor.. the car just rocks.. love it.

My 82' 300SD has 313,*** miles on the odometer.

As far as service is concerned I couldn't tell you a thing, my dad's shop does all of the service. I bring my car to him every 5k miles for oil changes though.

He has a 87' 300SDL which is almost at 200k miles.

I work in an auto parts store. We sell Borg Warner spark plug wires. Borg Warner owns Beru, so that's what they package.

15. Paint condition, I'd say, is pretty good but a couple of rust spots to be fixed.
16. No major repairs....did all the intake valve seals, valve job with all new guides and seals. new throttle... (had to do it right the first time) i still need to do the suspension work. thats my new project.

1) What oil changel interval do you follow, 3K, 5K, 7K, 10, other?
Every 3000 miles

2) What type of oil do you use dyno, synthetic, synthetic blend?
Just regular 20w50

3) What brand of oil do you use most often?
Pennzoil

4) Do you use oil additives, Slick50, other?
A bottle of Restore every once in a while; other than that, no.

5) Do you replace the oil filter everytime you replace the oil?
Absolutely; not just with a 126 but with any car.

6) What trans. oil change interval do you follow?
The recommended interval; filter + fluid every 30,000 miles

7) Spark plugs change interval, and brand/type (for example: Bosch/Cooper,)?
Bosch plugs every 30,000 miles as recommended by Mercedes or sooner if needed

8) Ignition caps + rotors change interval?
Same as plugs

9) Ignition wires change interval?
Also the same as plugs

10) Air filter change interval?
Every other oil change or sooner if needed

11) Power Steering fuel change interval?
Fluid & filter with at the same time as the transmission services

12) Radiator fluid change interval?
Every 2 years or 45,000 miles

13) What grade fuel do you use, regular-87, intermediate-89, premium-92/93?
Premium only. These cars require a minimum of 91 octane. Anything less than that is not good for them and has the potential to damage the engine

14) In general, how often you wash/wax your car?
Wash once a week, polish and wax every two weeks to one month.

15) Condition of you car's paint?
A picture is worth 1000 words here... I think this is decent considering the paint is 20 years old this month:

16) Major repairs to date?
Transmission ate it at 90-odd thousand miles, rebuilt cylinder heads due to excessive oil consumption at around 125k. Other than that all major repairs have been preventitive in nature... replaced the timing chain, tensioner, & guides when I did the heads (I'd advise doing that every 100-125k), rebuilt the suspension, etc. The transmission and the heads were the only things that *needed* to be done though.

17) Anything else you would like to share?
The best thing you can do for these cars is to have someone that knows the cars (such as a shop that specializes in german cars or Mercedes) inspect the car thoroughly every 6 months, repairing and replacing things as needed, and stay on top of the maintenance. A well cared for 126 is an incredible car. A poorly maintained one can quickly become a nightmare.
