Hi:

Anybody out there have the Command Nav system and the Motorala Timeport phone w/ voice control in their C Class? I have a C320 (~7500 miles so far - love it) and am considering making these additions. Any comments? Worth the price (close to $4K)?

Thanks!

I don't have COMAND but would also like to add it to my C240 IF IT WERE POSSIBLE. I bought my car off the lot and decided to do without the COMAND in order to not have to wait several months. Please let me know if COMAND can actually be added. Thanks.
PROBSCHED

According to a guy on the CLK forum, it can be done but is EXTENSIVE. (More)

Most of the inside of the car has to be removed as well as adding different looms and wiring harness. The rear Window is differnet as far as the com bar used as well.

He went on to say that busing COMAND as a factory option is a lot cheaper than buying all the parts after market and trying to make it work with the extensive re wiring.

I personally have never known anyone with enough time and balls to try to make this work.

The COMAND unit alone is $4,000 just for the head unit.
ca.216.202.172.140.gtecablemodem.com

Yes, command CAN be added. It is quite
expensive and requires lot of work but
it is definitely doable.

Look at www.megacomm.de it is in german, but
these guys are professionals in aftermarket
COMAND installations. They are even able to
put it into ANY car, not just Mercedes (i've
seen Opel Zafira and some Ford with COMAND!)

Buying head unit off the dealer would be
of course extremely expensive, but there is
a great chance of getting it from the crashed
car or something like that.
Month ago i've saw ad in local automotive
newspaper; it was ~$1000 and included
COMAND head unit, TV tuner module, all the
wiring, BOSE amplifier and some other tiny
parts. You just have to look around.
There was one on the e-bay some time ago.

PSYCHOP

Yes, COMAND can be added, but there are different versions of COMAND out there. The one that goes into the ML does pretty much the same as the one for the new C-Class, but is more or less a stand-alone device. It can be fitted into almost any car.

The one from the new C-Class has an optical CAN (B2B) bus - and is only for the C-Class.

In Europe it's a factory option or a forget-it (just because of the labour prices and the intensive work involved in replacing all the cabling, rear window, etc.). Apart from that, I wouldn't like to have a car that has been ripped apart almost totally by a dealer.

I heard that the US models come all with complete wiring, but before buying the head unit, I would double check on that with MBUSA.

I wanted to add a TV tuner to my COMAND system. Factory price rougly 1000 Dollars. They wanted to charge me around 3000 Dollars for the installation (4 antenas somewhere in the car, TV tuner in the trunk, fiber cabling, etc.). Apart from the price, I really don't like them to unscrew almost everything in the interiour of my car. Who knows how well they fit all together afterwards ...

Thanks for everyone's input. The official word from MBUSA Customer Service is that it is not possible to add COMMAND and the Timeport phone as post-production options. Oh well, the C320 is still a great car; just have to remember to order these ops on my next MB!
dialup-166.90.46.157.Dial1.SanFrancisco1.Level3.net
