I have a 2007 Canadian C280 4Matic AvantGuard and am about to buy a set of rims for the winter tires. The OEM wheels are 17", but can I use 16" instead? Here is what I know:

- The door pillar says the original tire size is 225/45 R17, or T125/90 R16 for the donut.
- The owner's manual says the tires should be 205/55 R16.
- The brake rotors appear to be about 280mm with lots of clearance for a 16" rim.

So, are the 17" wheels just there for show? Will a 16" wheel work as well? Any gotchas?

Thanks

There are a lot of sets of 16" CLK wheels around - they look good, and will give you 7" wides in the front and 8" wides at the rear for even more width snow tires. Clearance is not a problem.

I have a set on my C320 and they run fine. You have to keep the suggested sizes of tires to keep the different size tires running at the same revs per mile:

205 x55 at front and 225 x 50 at rear

initially I had 17" wheels with 45 profile tires, but these were uncomfortable given the advanced state of deterioration of our local roads. I sold the wheels and got the CLK set and have been very happy
