Statistics from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority show the C-Class model family at the top of the figures for new registrations in the mid-range segment for the first time ever. With a total of 156,900 registrations in Germany in 2001, the C-Class was ahead of the relevant competitors. BMW's 3 Series took second place with 147,300 new registrations, followed by VW Passat (139,200). <br>

The C-Class first embarked on the road to success in March 2000, when the new C-Class sedan celebrated its world premiere. A total of 429,100 units have been sold worldwide since market launch in May 2000, including 165,400 sedans in Germany. Both the sports coupe presented at the 2000 Paris Motor Show and the station wagon unveiled at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show have also sold well. Last year, Mercedes-Benz sold some 281,200 new C-Class sedans worldwide, as well as more than 52,500 new C-Class station wagons and nearly 59,300 sports coupes. <br>

The new C-Class has thus been able to continue the success story begun by its predecessor models: Between 1982 and 1994, Mercedes-Benz sold approximately 1,878,700 units of the 190, which marked the brand's entry into the mid-range segment. This was followed by the first generation <br>

C-Class, of which some 1,868,200 (sedan and station wagon) units were sold up until 2001. As such, the C-Class has been almost as successful as Mercedes-Benz' top-selling model series, the E-Class, of which Mercedes-Benz has sold approximately 10.9 million vehicles over the last 50 years. The latest model version of the E-Class was recently presented to the public.<br>

The great success of the C-Class was in part responsible for total sales of roughly 1,113,500 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in 2001, an increase of approximately six percent on the previous year. <br>

'The market leadership of the C-Class underscores the success of our model policy, particularly in view of ever-increasing competition - above all in the mid-range segment,' says Prof. Jürgen Hubbert, DaimlerChrysler Executive Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars and smart. 'We have succeeded in developing a model family that meets the individual needs of its customers - whether young or old, male or female. And we've done it in a segment that we entered only 20 years ago.'<br>

Innovations in the C-Class<br>

Improvements to the C-Class model family's appearance have been accompanied by several new technical features. These include the driving-light assistant, the LINGUATRONIC system for car telephones and audio systems, the multi-functional steering wheel, the TELEDIAGNOSE breakdown service in connection with TELEAID, and a five-speed pushbutton automatic transmission. <br>
