New to the Benz world, ripped off by a guy who sent me an un-useable set of dvds off ebay, said to be service manuals. Anyone got an ideal on a buzzing noise seemingly from the inside rear view mirror? As a long time mechanic I'd really like some factory manuals or suggestions as I'd really like to get to know my 1996 300 Diesel before it needs me to.................. I'm freaked out because I'm a manual freak and all I currently have is a Pocket Mechanic for the W210 series, thanks in advance.

There is a tiny fan in the overhead console (look for a vent) to draw the inside air across a sensor as part of the climate control system. More than likely that is the source of your buzzing. I can't remember if cleaning helps that but It's an easy r/r. Check the sticky threads at the top of the page or try a search. It's been discussed a couple of times.

Regarding the service manuals, buy the DVD directly from MBUSA (800-FOR-MERC). The DVDs on eBay have been said to be illegal/pirated copies. Sorry to hear you got ripped.

Good luck and welcome!

Mercedes is out of stock on the CD/DVD manuals, at least for the '97 E300D that I own, and indicates that it will not be producing more. I am interested in a good service manual, but I have found that the forums have covered most of the problems I have had so far. Don't know what I would do without them.

This W210 forum is the best. I haven't had a problem that wasn't already covered here. Only other as good as this one is W163.
Sadly the W124 forum, even those vehicles are way older didn't cover many problems I had with the car I purchased this year. Members are very helpful, but in couple of troubles on 23 years old car, I was the first one discussing them.

The Buzz noice is most likely the "HVAC Sampler Blower Motor" it is located to the left of the mirror on the overhead unit that houses reading lights and sunroof switch. I have had little luck cleaning a/o lubricating this units. Easy to replace, part should cost no more than $120.00.

I would not recomend trying to service the existing part as this may require repeated removal of the plasic housing, over time this plastic can become brittle and the tabs can be easily broken.

i would order a replacement part and fix it right / fix it once.

Cheers,

I had to replace mine recently. They share the same part number with the W140 S-class. The part number is 140 830 00 08. Cost me 60+ USD in my part of the woods.

Yes don't bother servicing it. It is a tiny motor enclosed in a plastic holder. This gets slot mounted into the overhead console and it is held in place by plastic clips that are part of the overhead console cover. I would be careful with tiny plastic mounting parts for cars of our age. They tend to be brittle and can break easily.

+1 in the mini fan making the noise, and clear some space on your hard drive and get out your credit card and click on this link.

Thanks for the responses..

Thanks will check out fan, did go to the MB link, impressed and would definitely subscribe if vehicle was out of service. In meantime will look for manuals. 30 yrs. mechanical experience, former Ase certifications, an A/P license, blah blah blah, but without proper imfo am intimidated by the Benz, that coupled w/ poor typing skills will limit my queries to site, thanks again I will begin combing the 210 section to glean what I can and not wear out my welcome. :)

Greetings from Michigan,
I have the same buzzing noise in my 1999 E300D. It has been there for some time and is beginning to bother me more and more.
I have pulled off the opaque light covers on both sides but do not see and easy way to remove the next layer. I am afraid of breaking some brittle tab.
Does anyone have directions on how to access the little fan?
Thanks

The repair info has been unavailable, and discontinued, and only worked on XP. The 140 dvd was a copy of the shop manual they offered, I have a copy of the 120 dvd but it is not the best info. I would check with "books for cars" on the web to see what is available. I gave my 140 dvd away and kept the 210 but have recently traded the car.

Compressed air and vacuum did not do anything for mine, actually made it worse after a while, I unplugged the damn thing at the beginning of the summer. You get an error message for the sensor #1 if you try to run the on board diagnostic because it cannot read the inside temperature and if I remember correctly the Rest function ( keeping the cabin warm) is not working if the little fan is unplugged so I'm getting close to plug it back in as it's getting cooler here day by day.

Unfortunately, manual do not exist for this car. There were some DVD/CDs but MBUSA withdrew them because they did not run on most computers. Only option, it seems, is to go on eBay and buy an illegal version of MB WIS (Workshop Information System). There is quite a learning curve but it has full MB shop data - same as dealers use.

You can sign up on Startek for EPC (parts manual). It is useful when ordering parts and also has diagrams which in some cases help in understanding how things go together. They ask for a credit card just to prove you live in USA, but it is otherwise free.
