Is that what that is??

I was looking at it thinking, "What the f%$#"

The fog lamps look quite nice too.

Someone probably banged it up just before the sale and ran off to a junkyard, nervous, saying, "Gimme something", and he got something alright.

I don't think I would have spotted it as something off a 190E of similar vintage....

After a second look there is an error: he has leather seats made of cloth.

The cloth seats and door panels are standard in European market cars. it looks like its been heavily Federalized. But it does not have that ‘grey market’ look. Also the distributor is different as the second gen cars had a dizzy with a cover. Perhaps something to do with the new engine.

That's unusual looking fabric. Is this typical of a 560 S Class car? Seems like it should be nicer.

For a European market car, yes. Standard leather in the 126 S class in those days – remember, this is almost 20 years ago – was a NA market thing. The old style leather can be hot in summer and cold in winter; the cloth is the opposite. The down side to the cloth as you noted is it does not wear as well as the leather, which can look new for years if cared for.

My 560SEL came from San Francisco. It was a $6,000 buy with only 80K on it.
I took the risk without inspecting.
$9,000 later: rebuilt tranny, injectors, belts, rear suspension, rust behind rear window, rust on doors and trunks, etc.
But I love the car. Even if the body is crooked (apparently rolled or in a cotton top fender bender) and the paint under par..... ha ha

The first photo, as is now after cosmetic adds.
