Buying a 600 SEL, 1992...

11404 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by keide600sel
(I accidentally posted this in the 'general forum'...)

I have an opportunity to buy a beautifully maintained, navy, 1992 600 SEL, have not asked about mileage yet, from my brother, for what will be around $20,000. Since I live in another state and I've never owned a Mercedes, I'm concerned about the maintainence on this car. Does anyone have any experience with it? He has told me that the only thing that does not work properly is the heater blower on the drivers' side - but since he lives in the South - it's not a problem. It will be for me since I'm in Denver... Any advice (should I run for or away from this deal?)directions, or suggestions on mechanic shops are appreciated.

Kathy

Hi Kathy:

While I can't give you advice about the car you are contemplating buying, I can give you another site to post your question.

If you are interested, just let me know.
PS I had concerns about a new car and I posted here without any responses. However, on the other board, I got tons of advice from a Mercedes mechanic. He was right on the money with the problem with the car I had asked questions about.

June,
I would be most interested in knowing what the other site is... Thank you.
Kathy
Check out my post a little ways below this one-S500 vs.S600:NO CONTEST? I think you can get most of your questions answered there. Just remember, the V12 600s are rare, desireable cars, esspecially one from 1992. [ first year released ]
Don't let the opportunity pass you by. Good luck.
Thank you for the direction. It seems to be a car of passion - either for or against it...
I'M BUYING THE '92 600 SEL!!!!!!!!!

Please wish me luck on this!! I just can't pass it up... but I know I need to find Stu Ritter here in Denver... Someone said he's the best, but someone else said he isn't in the business anymore... Does anyone know how I can reach him?

Thank you again!!

Kathy
Hi Kathy!

I am so happy that you decided to purchase the car.

The other site is on Yahoo. I am not sure if you have to be a member or not to post, but I posted and got an immediate response about repairs on an S 420, 1999 model with engine problems.

If you go to 'Yahoo', then go to 'autos', then to 'make and models', click on 'Mercedes Benz' and post a question to 'Ask Stretch,' you will get a response.

The car that I had questions about needed a new steering gear box. The Benz dealer and repair shop, where I first purchased the car, took the engine apart twice to fix it. This was not a good thing, so I ended up returning it. I knew what was wrong with the car before the mechanics at the dealer did because my question was answered by a professional MB mechanic on line.

Good luck to you and I hope repairing the heating system in the car isn't going to be a huge investment!

Keep us posted! And I am jealous of your find!

Hugs,

June

Good luck on your purchase -- replacing an evaporator in a 140 is not for the faint of heart:

http://people.ne.mediaone.net/fmulone/140/W140.html

That said, everyone ought to own a V-12 once in their life (I has a '95 Jaguar XJ12 sedan -- great car) -- it teaches the kids to be good lookouts for cheap premium!
Re: I'M BUYING THE '92 600 SEL!!!!!!!!!

Hi Kathy my name is Ty and it is so funny on how our situations are th same. I just bought my V-12 and it is a 92. This is a car before its time. I am in total love with my veh. and she runs great. The engine is super and I love how it performs. Do you notice when you go from a complete stop and you don't feel the car shift but you see the speed just keep going up and up. It seems like it has only one gear because you don't hear or feel it shifting. My veh. is black and is totally loaded. I also has a kit on it that suites the car just right. It looks totally different from a stock 600 and turns the car into a beautiful beast. I still am not use to people turning their heads when I ride past them.....makes you feel good. I hope you are enjoying your veh. and let the heads turn. Enjoy the V-Twezee......Ty

600SEL

Hi, I have a 94 S600 and I can say that I like it more than the new S-class. However you must remember that this is a $120,000 car and even if now costs $20,000 you mantain the 120,000 car not the 20,000 car. The best car in the world though.
600SEL

Kathy it is a great car I have dha a 500 for almost 10 years. The v12 is probably a little more costly to maintain, but the cars are great and my wife wont let me get rid of it considering the costs we have endured. The ac is expensive all those cars had a bad evaporator (dash out etc $3-4K 2k if the factory rep helps. The blower controller also in the 1K area. The rear self leveling shocks 500 ea, the rest is rather normal except fot the closing sssist pump, the Bose Amp is known to go. Try searching on 140 on this forum there are posts.
search this one also you will have to sign up like this onehttp://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/index.php3
Re: 92 600sel -I have one and I love it!

Hi kathy, If I were you I would go for it. Since it is your brother who owned it you will not have to worry about it being in an accident etc. People often wine about high mantainance costs. When I first got mine I had a few problems and had to spend a few thousand on repairs. But since then it has been running like a new car. I have a friend who has the same car and it has gone 160,000+ miles and he still has had no huge problems with it and it looks like new. Expect to spend around 3,000 on repairs the first year and 1,000-1,500 average per year after that. A thousand a year is really not that bad if you think about it. I would go for it if it is around or under 80K miles. -good luck and take good care of it. Also it is very important to change the oil every 3k miles. It will pay for itself by far.
once again good luck. - Kristian
