Newbie here...I am looking at a beautiful 1999 500 SL. I am having it inspected by a MB dealer. Is there anything else I should look for in particular regarding this model?

Thanking you in advance for your help.

Buying a 1999

I not an expert but I would consider a 98. You get more horsepower and four valves per cylinder. 99 has three per cylinder and produces less horse power. On my 98 if I ever have an engine failure it will be rebuilt to even highr levels of horsepower and the extra valve will help alot.

How much and what kind of mileage. Also where in the US?

I beg to differ with snice. Although the 1999 has 302HP whereas the 1998 has 315, the 1999 is actually .3 FASTER 0-60. The 1999+ has the same engine as the new SL500's. Mercedes makes things better over time, hence the change from 4 valves to 3. The 1999+ also has the Napa Leather interior (BIG difference in comfort and plush-ness), and chrome rings around the guages and shifter. Many also came with Xenon headlights. If I had the money, I would prefer a 1999+ SL over any earlier model. I think that the 1999-2002 R129's are the best cars that Mercedes has ever built - much more solid than the new R230's, and certainly more well appointed than any earlier R129's.

What makes the later car better?

I won't say I know enough to really get involved in the argument, but I know the 3 valve technology uses 2 intakes and one exhaust to assist cold starting - the benefits of this vary according to personal use. If I was looking at power upgrades, I would probably go for 4v, otherwise get the later model.

LOVE THE CAR!!!!!!!!

Thanking all you wonderful people for your help.

Your are right about the interior.

It is white with a light brown top and the most supple light tan seats.
