Many smaller import service centers were able to work on the 320 engines before 1995. The diagnostic tools require an investment of over $2,000 to work on them now. These guys run a tight margein and often do not see the economy of this investment. The only problem that I'm aware of was the wiring harness meltdown in the '93-'94 'S' series. The E 320 is a reliable engine.

My dad's trying to sell his '99 E320. Since we've had it only one major electrical problem occured, and that was with the radio, which they replaced under warantee. Other than that, it was small stuff, like the passenger side mirror not tilting when it was in reverse.
Don't even think twice about buying one. You won't regret it. This is his 3rd E-Class so far, and he loves it.
