Hello:
:)
I’m thinking on buying a 1997 r129 sl320 with 26000 miles. And I am looking for some advice. What should I look for?? How do I know the car condition?? And most important off all... Is a 1997 r129 a car for everyday use??? Is it reliable ?

If you are not comfortable assessing the condition of the car you should take it to a mechanic for an inspection. That should be a nice car for daily use however. In most markets that was the first year of the 722.6 electronic 5 speed transmission, which had a somewhat troubled early life, and is more difficult to maintain than the 722.5 from previous years - but that's not necessarily a reason not to buy an otherwise good car.

:) Thanks deanyel for your advise on the transmision. Now, about the car´s reliability, do r129 need to much work done?? I mean, how often do these cars fail??? Because I am planning to buy this car to use it on an everyday basis.

Hi MaxR129.

Welcome aboard the R129 forum!

The Model-Year 1997 is an excellent production year. Yes, and from my understanding, most of us R129 members drive these cars on a daily basis, and in my opinion, the engine and drivetrain are very solid and are 'generally' very reliable if properly serviced and maintained. Although minor, but more costly problems are commonly encountered here on the forum as you can see. All in all these are great cars, however it is a Mercedes, so therefore it can get costly for repairs if neccesary. Luckily, I have owned mine since the end of 2007 and to this day and personally, I have not had any real mechanical or electrical problems with mine. Mostly general maintenence, broken old plastics, plus other minor cosmetic issues.

Here are a few links to similar topics worth reading if you are on the market for an R129 which also can be found using the 'advanced search' features. Although the below topics may not be directly related to the SL320 in particular, however the contained information should provide you with a good general idea of what to look for when purchasing a R129.

Thanks NEOKEN !!! The links where very useful.

Now just for asking... the thing is that the car has the anti roll bar light on, what can cause this light to turn on??? If you have an idea, how much can it cost to repair that on a MB dealer???

You are welcome Max,

Typically speaking, if the roll bar lamp is illuminated, more than likely the switch simply needs to be reset. No major costs are involved to have the dealer reset the codes. However, I cannot personally confirm this is the case without diagnosis.

Also, there are tons and tons of detailed information pretaining to resetting the roll bar switch, diagnostic procedures, etc. which are archived in the R129 Blue Stickies which I would highly suggest that you take a look at. Also if you try using the R129 forum's 'advanced search features' you shall find many related topics of discussion which are also very helpful as well.

I have a 1996 SL320 and love it. I use it for my daily driver - including the winter when temps get -40 and we have 4 feet of snow (of course the roads are well plowed!). I too had my rollbar light on and had to have it reset at the dealer, they charged me $65. I also bought mine for $8,000 USD off of eBay with 87,000 miles. The guy who had it before me out a good amount of money into it with maintenance/repairs. Pay attention to head gaskets (especially with such low miles) but other then that just get ready to have fun!!! Even the 6 cylinder is plenty fast and I can spin the old times anytime I want. I love mine :D
