Hi
I am new here and am thinking of buying a 1992 300 CE. The body has very little rust and seems straight which is great considering the Canadian winters.
The car has 274,000 Kilometers or 170,000 miles on it.
The only issues with car are when it starts cold it surges between 500-600 rpm then once it warms up it idles 1500-2000rpm in park or about 1000 rpm in drive. The owner has been driving it like this for a couple months. The second issue is the ac stopped working at the end of the summer
I can pick up the car for around $1200.00 Canadian. Just wondering if this car is too high of mileage and how long it will take to fry the transmission at this rpm. The transmission does seem to have a bit of a delay from the time you put it in gear to the time it moves 1/2 second to a full second.
The car has little issues like cracked front headlight lenses couple small pieces of trim issues normal wear and tear.
The reason I am thinking about it is a project for me and my 10 year old. do not want to get into a full major rebuild.
I was originally looking for a 500/560 SEC but found this one with a really straight body but high mileage and really like the style of it. He said he looked after it but when you hear that he drove it for a couple months like this you wonder.
Also how do I know if it has the sportline package or the 12/24 valve engine. Are these cars rare, easy to find or something in-between, will they become collectors cars? Is the mileage really bad or is it nothing for a Benz?
Any help on this is greatly appreciated

Looks like the motor in the picture, how narrow is the 12 valve 1 inch or so?

No pics uploaded mate....you will be able straight away to tell the difference between that and the 12valve....On this one I had, the linkage under the air filter was sticking and it was revving high.

It worked
Is the mileage too high should I run? What damage if any do you could have been cause to transmission driving it for a couple months with the high idle?

Don't know how you did that, but the pictures went to my e-mail first....Mine had a 24 badge on the back, but that's not really an indication...That looks good from the pictures...I sold mine a few months ago,90% mint for £800...nobody here really wants them....Sportlines have a badge on the wing, gear knob..steering wheel and sit lower due to the suspension.

This is a E320 coupe 1993 that I also had...It wasn't a sportline but it had the sportline suspension option (653).....You also have the 8 hole alloys.

I know it not a sportline. So they want $1200,00 Canadian for this or about 735 British Pounds. It has 274,000 Kilometers or 170,000 miles has 3 rust spots about 1/2 inch diameter and clear coat peeling on the top of the left front fender I would be owner number 3
The mileage is what scars me I drive VW Golfs

I should clear that up I know now it is not a Sportline from your earlier post. but it does have the big valve cover like in the picture you posted. I miss read it and thought you meant a smaller black inlay strip hence why I asked about it being an inch wide.

The E320 is a sharp looking car
I still regret selling that, but I had nowhere to put it..in 3 years apart from servicing it only needed 2 bulbs and I repaired the wiring harness myself..I'm not sure from which year they had dodgy harnesses, but that's something to consider.....The mileage wouldn't put me off as long as the car is ok....give it a good going over.

Thanks for the tip on the wiring that is why I stopped driving Volvo's they were horrid in the 80ties for wiring. Any other trouble areas?
When I was younger i had a couple of older Mercedes 280 1974 and 1976 or around there. Then in my 30ties i had a 1980 280sl which was imported from Germany to Canada from my wife's uncle.
Just not looking for a money pit and want something different. I have not seen many of these here and I am guessing people did not think they would become a collector cars so I bet a lot ended up in salvage yards. Looking for a drivable restoration project. I will end up driving it on weekends etc not as a daily driver I have a Golf to drive every day
How bad are the parts for Mercedes now. Is there much DIY work or does it need to go into a shop.

W124's are pretty much DIY,although I did work for a MB garage for quite a while.....I'm always telling people that seem to be scared of them that if you are DIY minded then there is no need to be. Parts are cheap (here anyway).if you can do the brakes on a VW you can do them on this. Check the front spring perches, although in my experience it's rare they go on them, but does happen....Rear windows if they don't get used can stick, seatbelt arms stop working...All DIY stuff that you can do as you go along really...To me as long as underneath is solid and the body isn't falling to bits then there's not an awful lot to worry about. Is it a four or five speed?...I'm doing a fair amount of work on my 210 as I go along but 124's to me are much easier....I could have got forever out of the two I had,but I have also seen a lot of sheds....going off your pics I would travel to look at it,which I don't say often...I think your biggest problem could turn out to be the A/C, mine didn't work but it's only needed here a few days of the year! So didn't bother, plus with the roof open and all four windows down is fantastic and no pillar on the doors....Also the price sounds great...I've seen people in the US paying thousands for one like that one,and I'm thinking I could buy 4 or 5 here for for what they are paying...As it got electric seats?

Hey
When you say wings are you taking front fenders?
The car has a small dent below driver side taillight and a small rust spot surface about half the size of a beer cap. Then there is just starting surface rust right front fender above the wheel about the same size and the final spot is driver side rear window about half way up looks to be surface as well and the same size once again.
I am just wondering if it is worth $1200.00 Canadian if you sold yours for 800 British Pounds which is around $1300.00 Canadian and yours was 90% mint this i would rate about 40-50% I talked him down from $1500 Canadian
There is little things in the interior small rip on drivers seat, both seat switches are broken(missing knobs but work) the center cover the plastic wood looking thing is broken not bad and the seat belt plastic trim which frames the hole where the front seat belt comes out is broken and the rest of the leather is normal wear for a 92
