Had one similar to that in the glove box of my '69 Chevelle to disable power to the updated HEI distributor.
What's a HEI distributor and why would you want to disable it? : )

I think this one leads to the 2 wires coming through the firewall into the engine compartment that have been snipped off, though I haven't actually traced it to those...

HEI is what GM called their first breakerless electronic ignition- "High Energy Ignition." Probably a homemade antitheft device.

To keep the metal bits from scraping on each other, making noise that detracts from the SL ride. Both my SLs had them, in factory original colors and styles. From that, I'll guess that MB put them in there. I left them in.

HEI was the acronym for High Energy Ignition which was introduced by GM in 1975. It was their entry into the electronic ignition era, and was an easy retrofit upgrade to earlier, contact point equipped ignition systems, on both small block and big block Chevrolet engines. The HEI distributor itself had a single wire power feed, and by installing a simple inline switch the ignition system could be disabled at will. A poor man's anti-theft device, as it were. I must have installed several dozen back in the day.

I had a Mallory dual point in my '64 Chevelle. That was before the HEI came out!

Just curious... Are the 107's targets for theft? I "lost" an 02 325 CiC two years ago. Can't imagine that thieves are interested in an old MB. Anyone?

I don't think anyone is going to steal a 107, I don't lock mine unless I go into the city or a funky neighborhood. I don't think 9/10 people even know how to open the door on the car.

My car is worth more than an american model in parts, but that isn't going to get it stolen.

One failed attempt to steal mine so far, and a friend had his 560SL stolen 18 months ago, and I saw it turn up on ebay last year, advertised as a 350SL that had had a 560SL drive train and interior installed.

How did you catch it? And what happened to the seller?

It was advertised for sale in a not so reputable part of town, and it was clearly not a 350SL, it was anthacite (a colour the 350SL never came in) and it had exactly the same interior as Mike's car. It also had no hard top (Mike's car was stolen without his hardtop, and I ended up buying it off him), so I know it was his.

I informed one of the guys from the MB Club here who was a police officer, and he passed the info on, not sure what came of it.

I kind of lost interest when the insurance company told me the couldn't care less (I mean, WTF??? it is there car now they've paid Mike out).

And it was just before I went to Europe, so I hadn't thought about itagain until now.
