I got message about low level oil (second in 3-4 months). The very first time I thought that technican didn't put enough oil when I did my mainitanance and I put up to max level. After ~5,000 km (~4,000 mi), my level is close to minimum. I cannot notice any oil leak (I see some wet spots on turbo) but nothing major.

The car is still under warranty (3,000 km left) and I'd like get it fix it under warranty or get rid of car, if it's going make me a problem on long run.

Do you know what it should be checked or possible problem ...?

Alex

I am not familiar with diesel models however this happens on both my gas models although at bigger mile intervals. The engines seem to consume about a quart every 5K miles. My service advisor said it is normal.

My 2008 CDI used way more than this until about 50,000 miles when it dropped to about a QT in 10,000mi. It is not unusual for a diesel to take many more miles than a gas engine to seat everything, although I think mine took more than expected! Also, note that a fill with 9QTS will put the oil level on the stick at half-way between min and max.
I don't see anything to worry about even at a QT every 4-5000mi.

I got ML500 2006, got same problem, been getting oil change at a dealer and was getting massage to add 1-2 qt of oil after about 3-5k, i took it to dealer and they added more oil for free, and the massage stopped. After another oil change i got same thing. So i am thinking doing my own oil change, i doubt that the car consumes so much oil, i believe dealer doesn't put enough, they just put as much oil so that the sensor stops showing "add 1-2 qt oil" massage. So i suggest doing it your self and save yourself. $120 oil change at dealer, DIY= about $66 oil (8qts) oil filter $14 Total $80 and you save $40

I used to have 2007 R320 CDI - same engine as 2008 ML320 CDI ..I never touched or checked oil ...I changed oil every 8,000 km and level was almost unchanged ...

For now, I'd like check it before warranty runs out ....I'd like hear owners experience before I make case with MB

After first message, I put oil by myself - I put on max level and after ~5000 km, I got message about low level ...Base on manual, the dipstick is ~ 2.1 lit and once you get message, you are about 0.7 lit to minimum. It's around ~1.5 lit for 5,000 km ..
I reported problem to MB and they are going measure level next week and after 1,000 km again ...
If it's leak, I am OK but if it's head gasket or anything inside engine, I'd like fix it NOW under warranty ...
