I am looking at replacing (or perhaps refinishing) my 87 SEC gear shift surround. Couple of questions for the lords of W126 wisdom:

1. Are all 86-91 shift surrounds interchangeable (i.e. will a 91 fit my 87)? I know the plastic shift plate and trim changed around 90 or so, but just wondered about fitment.

2. Can the plastic shift surround (trim that covers the wood edge) be replaced - or are they part of the wood assembly? Can this peice be purchased separately from the dealer?

Tks,

Al Lydon

1) As you mentioned, there was a change in 1989 I think. So you need to look for a 1986-1988 burl shift surround to fit your 1987.

2) there's a part # for this trim piece, but apparently it cannot be ordered from the dealership and only come with a new wood surround ordered from the dealership.

Hey there Al,
I do beleive that all the shift knobs are the same, but the surrouns is different from 89 up. That center piece on your car is indeed not available:-/

I have a burl shift knob out of my 87 SEL, let me know if you're interested!
