It is stainless steel. I remove the caps and take the to a metal polishing company. I suppose you can do it by hand but I wouldnt want to do it that way

Try 3000 wet and dry in an inconspicuous area. If that doesn't work Rick's method will.

Wenol makes a good metal polish. I bought 2 tubes from a dealer at a car show. Also bought some cheese cloth to use with it. Red followed by Blue for your purposes; Blue for maintenance as time goes on.

Wenol Red

Wenol Blue

I've some light scratches on mine as well, and I was going to cut, polish and buff them with my dual polisher. I'll be doing the bumpers one evening next week, I'll share some pics.

US park bench bumpers are stainless. ROTW and '72-'73 US are chrome. I think the over riders on the '72-'73 are stainless. There are copies of the ROTW bumpers made of stainless on the market.

Be very careful to verify your bumper material before attempting any refurbishment. Steel wool, however fine, can be death to chrome plating.

No. Just grab a bottle of Meguiar's ScratchX, a microfiber towel, and some elbow grease. Buy ScratchX from Walmart, I found that Walmart sells them the cheapest. However, don't use ScratchX to compound or polish the whole car, it's made for "spot" scratch removal. Edit: Can we get a picture too?

These are not deep scratches but lighter most likely from wrong product used prior. I have scratch X. Yellow buffing Wheel and compounds both white and grey. Just not sure which to use. Is 1988 560SL stainless or is it chrome? Not Positive. Short of removing the bumper and taking it to a polishing shop I prefer to see if I can accomplish this without screwing it up more. Thanks for the help.

My 87 is SS - use magnet - SS = non magnetic. Fairly certain yours is SS unless someone swapped it out for chrome.

The shiny part with scratches in you picture? If original bumper it is not plastic.

Stainless is not always magnetic. Depends on the composition.
