I have a friend who owns an S420 (don't know the year) that he claims has bullet-proof glass. I don't know from bullet-proof, but the side glass is about 1/4" thick and has a thin lip to fit the gasket groove. It's mirrored, but I can't tell if it's OE or after market. This is obviously some sort of special glass, but what kind? On that note, if the glass is bullet-proof, would the car necessarily be armored as well? It's a clapped-out POS with 320k miles that he has let run down hill from there, but it's not my car or my problem. I'm just curious. Any help would be appreciated.

The S-class after 92/93 come with the four door windows glasses panel with
this type of glass from factory. Isn´t a bullet proof and the proposal of this
kind of glasses it´s sound insulation. Mercedes details.

ALL W140's that were produced from 1991 onwards have the double pane.

On a side note - does it not defeat the purpose of double glazed glass if the windscreen and rear window aren't also double glazed?
You would think so but it means that you car atleast repair the front windscreen if it chips I doubt you could if it was double paned like the side ones. I'd think it's pretty thick glass also.

Haku--if you saw the horrible shape this fine vehicle was in you'd feel like fightin' for sure. The interior looks like he lives in it, and hasn't bothered cleaning it for years. The outside has bits hanging off by the wiring and the paint looks like it was retouched with a brush. It's a real shame.
Thanks for the info everybody. I knew I would find my answer in here.

Main reason for double layer windows was to prevent them from getting foggy. The windschield is ventilated and the rear window is heated - so no need for double layer. In addition it would be to difficult.

the windows won't fog up? where the hell is the fun in that...?
Don't worry - as long as the engine is off - your windscreen and rear window will fog up (umm... I'm not talking from experience here...) :D

I went that extra step further and did tints all round (including the windscreen and rear curtains

Has anyone had issues related to double glazing at all? Cracking etc?

How about motel 6? Believe me I understand you young bucks that cant spring for a hotel but I personally dont think its too comfortable inside a car... Something about a w140 owner having a little class but if you gotta do it you gotta do it...Someone said to me a long time ago "if you can afford a mercedes you can afford a motel"...

Anyways I was told the side windows are double payne and also bullet resistant. Not sure if that is true but they are pretty thick that might stop a 22 but doubtful they would stop a 44 magnum
