Has anyone ever had the timing chain break on their M271 Kompressor engine? How much does a new engine cost, and does it include the blower already attached? How much does this engine typically cost to rebuild? I'm trying to determine if I should repair the engine, replace it, or junk and part out the car...I'm leaning toward the latter.

It's a 2005 C230K sedan, 106K miles.

Oberoi? U there buddy? :D
Please provide this poor soul some "straight forward advise" lest I bring on the gloom. ;)

ND4ZPD, check out Hogger's thread over on mbworld.
He did the work himself, but the parts were about $1500.
There's a thread here also somewhere, with pics from DIY pulling the head and repairing an M271. Ah seen it!

You could find a used engine at a junkyard, check car-parts.com
A replacement engine typically does not include the blower.
They can be sent out for servicing, new bearings, oil etc. for a few hundred.

Didn't they explain time difference to you at school?

As much as I would like to help ND4ZPD, I am not qualified to contribute on chain or engine replacement or repair - so I keep my mouth shut if I can't positively add to the debate.

Is there a good reason that MB use a single link timing chain on engine 271, but on other engines they always use a double link timing chain?

One might assume it was a cost cutting measure and it's quieter.
Early v8's had single row, but had so many problems MB issued
retrofit kits.
Everyone's been asking if such s kit might be forthcoming, but it doesn't seem to be.
Even Toyota saw fit to issue a kit for it's 22R engine while he earlier 20R had double row and was indestructible. Ha, my 2nd car Toyota PU with a camper.
