I've got a 2004 W639 Viano Marco Polo with 92.000km on the clock. Yesterday it made a very ugly noise when I started from home and after a few meters at low speed, I heard something fall off. I stopped and found a part of the left front spring on the road - the rest of the spring was leaning on top of the wheel. :crybaby2:

Today I decided to try to get it to a garage nearby (a few hundred meters). First I found a jack and lifted it to get the spring of the wheel and place it so it didn't destroy tyre, brakes or anything. Then I slowly drove to the garage. They looked at it and decided to take it in, but on its way through their parking space, the right front spring decided to brake as well - at exactly the same spot. The broken parts were identical - less than a millimeter in difference!

Now the car was really low - and hard to get onto their lift, but they managed to get it up. Fortunately nothing else was destroyed.

Has anyone else experienced broken springs on a W639?

Hi ya, i havent on a 639 but i had an E class estate and that broke first the right side front which was ok as the car was still sat on the remainder of the spring but about 200mtrs later the left side one did the same thing. They both broke about about 50mm from the top. I thought it was real strange at the time but have heard of others having similar problems on merc cars with springs breaking for no apparent reason

Cheers Martin
