Have been driving the 560SEC for about a week now and every now and the I would get a whiff of burnt oil. Sine I replaced the timing chain recently, which also meant new valve cover gaskets I simple assumed one was leaking. When I opened the hood I did notice just a little oil outside the breather. Well today on my run I decided the teat the engine some by WOT through some shift points. Besides a transmission issue under the hood I had oil all over the engine from the breather. Would this typically mean the egr ump is not working? It has belts on it so I know it runs. Where else should I look?

Is the breather line from the rear of the right side valve cover firmly plugged onto the airfilter fitting? If not...... you will smell the blow by fumes...

And with that in mind, if it's the same hose I'm thinking of (under the filter housing), I extended mine by an inch or so to make sure it was firmly in place on the metal pipe

Well this one was my own stupidity and I apologize for taking your time. Let me set the stage though before I tell you what I found. I had been driving the car a few days to find out all the issues with it. I had always planned to work on the engine first, "Plan A" which consisted of timing chain, valve seals, all hoses, tubing, injector holders, spark plugs, rotor, cap etc. I did that and "Plan B" was to begin on the front suspension. "Plan C" was to repaint the interior, which might be going on at the same time as "Plan B". I had the work set up this way so I could drive it some, work some, then drive it again. So the day I was out testing things, just after I jumped on it for the second time, and when I was within 3 blocks from home, not only was the engine smoking but the trans was slipping so it would not move. I basically had to coast into the driveway. I was lucky there but really disappointed since I had done so much work on it. You should know I was never quite sure of the trans since a few times reverse seemed light and seemed to slip but for the most part going into drive was crisp and it shifted well. So when all this went on I was ticked to say the least since a tranny rebuild was not in my cards. Although with all the hard plastics I found I should expect it I guess. So when I posted to all of you, it was after opening the hood and seeing the new fresh oil all over the passenger side of the engine coming from the filler cap and back onto the valve cover. I just assumed an engine issue since when I did a compression test, 6 cylinders were at 150 and two at 120. I had hoped it was just from sitting and if I ran it some I had planned to check it again. So, that was also in the back of my mind, like a possible broken ring. Prior to this I should tell you I did smell some slight oil burning but assumed it was a little leak from the valve cover. I had them off to do the timing chain and just assumed I did not get them on correctly. Well today I had time to look at things more since I was changing the injector holders and found I had put the oil fill cap on slightly crooked. It looked right but one of the tangs did not seat correctly and was open to the engine. Well when I put the hammer down the oil came out the cap and sprayed out. So I think that was the issue and not some internal problem. Of course I will not know until the hammer comes down again. As to the tranny, well I know all the bushings are gone and this week I am putting in new ones. I hope that it simply was the fact the transmission was not in gear since there is so much slop in the linkage. With new bushings maybe things will get better If not its Sun City trans here we come I guess. That was never in the plan.

A simple fix then... Good!

Also, sometimes due to age and the engine heat the cap gasket goes "flat", a replacement may be due, juss sayin'
