Removed the rear brake and fuellines today after smelling fuel and found a wet fuelline.

The lines looked good, nice clean, no rust. However removing the clamps and checking under the rubber showed severe surface rust, in fact two of the lines snapped as I removed them.

Good thing this did not happen when I needed full braking power 2 months ago. Replacing the lines is a major job, but that is another story.

Beware.

:thumbsup: As you state. A visual inspection would not show this.

Thanks

I have this problem on the e34 BMW we just bought, particularly the fuel lines. I am planning on replacing it all with this copper-nickel alloy stuff, which is said to be very easy to work with:

5 16" x 25' Copper Nickel Brake Line 90 10 25 Feet Roll Cupronickel | eBay
It is probably a good idea, but I have bought original MB ones (trying to keep the car as original as I can). The MB lines are very stiff, so I hope I will be able to bend them under the car. Probably need to make a tool for this, if not Cupronickel may be the solution.

Nah. Tools are available for everything.
