Some cars only use two - one on the front and one on the rear. The theory being that if one side's pads hit the sensor, then the other will be worn down as well, and as both sets should be changed together, why bother with another sensor.

If your car is to be well serviced, then you will never need the sensors as you will change the pads before they get that low.
Worry about having the front ones working, they are the important ones.
