Hi, charlycui
I have some questions for you?
By the time you replaced the Brake Pads and Rotor did you replaced the Wire sensors OR Not?
The Sensors can be reused if it's Not totally damaged.
If Not. Don't worry it's only some water make a conducting between the Rotor and The Wire which give you this Warning Light.
Also you can visually inspect the Brake pads in your ML by looking to the thickness of the remains pads.
4k mile is good distance and it may need to replace the pads But that depends on the style of driving ?[:D]

No way pads should be worn out in 4K miles! Did you replace front & back? (if not check the older pads). Otherwise look for a "contact" with one of the sensors (loose sensor or other debris?). Also, I believe that there are other conditions that can tirn on the light.

$600 brake job??

That sounds like a dealer that over-charges. Parts are about $150+ (for aftermarket OEM-like parts) and its an easy DIY (if you know how). But, 40K isn't bad for the ML. My first set was replaced at 20K! I rasied hell & the dealer did it for about $200 (not exactly sure on the price, its been a while). From then on, I did it myself.

Changed my ml430's brake pads n rotors about 4k miles ago. The brake sensor lights came on yesterday after the snow storm last week. Is this normal?
Is your light constantly on? If so, I would say one of your sensors is shorting out. I think normally the light should only come when brakes are applied.

I changed rotors and pads on the front + rear, all with OEM parts. Had the truck washed over the weekend and the warning light went away. There is squeaking in the rear, but that might be caused by the cold weather. Having my fingers crossed. I definitely don't want to pay to change them every 4k miles. How do I check the pad thickness? Do I need to take the wheels off?

You don't have to take the wheel off, but you'll get a better look if you do. I'm pretty sure you have either a bad sensor, or some debris in the sensor, there is no way the pads are bad after only 4k miles. I replaced my pads in the front with pads from Advance Auto Parts about 10,000 miles ago, and I've had no problems since, and I just checked them this weekend, almost no wear, and for only $36.00 for the pads, I'm stoked. I got the Weaver Silver's from Advance. We even measured the rotor's, and they didn't need replacing.

Good Luck
