the brake fluid GTLMA by Castrol exceeds DOT 3 and DOT 4, I belive it is SYNTHETIC and it is fine if mixed with the old one and if you are not sure if you did flush all fluid out and some was left and by that mixed up. YES you can use it in the SL but I will rate it at good and for sure not best brake fluid - (I do have that cr... "thing" in my 330CI and I can feel downgrade difference compared back to my factory original fluid fill. In my SL I flushed with ATE super blue and it is the BEST brake fluid like BREMBOS make the best brake caliipers awwww now will get comments on different brands :) ! You can get ate super blue (or gold) from performanceproducts for like $15 per bottle of 1Liter, but you will need around 600mls for complete flush. make sure you don't pump more than 12psi your brake bleeder - ! 2psi will go down on every calliper so keep eye on the gage! Also get rubber mallet to tap GENTLY on the callipers to get all the small bubbles from the inner corners. BEFORE performing brake bleeding get in your car and pump your brake pedal more than 70 times (yes it does sound crazy but 70times should work out.....) by that you will manually open the small "ports" (gates, call it whatever) inside your ABS unit otherwise you will not be able to flush the brake fluid from the ABS, unless of course if connected to the MB star computer. It took me 2 hours, but if I do flush NOT on my cars it will take me 20 min max ........

PS: btw get masking tape to cover your fenders, oh and you will need 9mm open key for the calliper bleeder screws. If you don't use torque wrench (I did not use it on purpose), before opening the calliper nipples MARK them with either marker or make some small scratch on the screw so when closing them it will align with the marks as it was before - ( and yeah of course that does not mean the previous person did it corecctly, but so far if it was good - it should be again good :) ) .......

hi Joe,
hmmm hat is very good question - will have to check in the books, as far as I can remember (short memory lol), I think it was with NO ENGINE RUNNING, but logically if I think it should be with running engine as by that the ABS doors will be open inside by the PC or whatever that is giving the comand ............... will check after the weekend - if someone know pls let us know !!! btw that procedure is for the BMW's, but the ABS units are not different at all than the Benzzzzzezzzz :) thx

hey aam, hehe LOL I did not know that I'm telling that inside info on A PRO ! After my 4 brake fluid flushes I tough that I'm the "pro" and keep giving advices left to to right - lol heh now I feel like ..... awwww --- :) argh why didn't you say so earlier aam :)
Well I'm driving my 5sp. bimmer with NO SHOES - just on bare feet since last summer did started doing that LOL and it is twice the shifting funn (heck my floor mats are cleaner lol ) :) - well for some reason I can feel the difference between the old (the original brake fluid from the factory) and the castrol after driving with both of them on the same mountain road down hill ..... and the original was better (kep in mind the car brake sustem is is not older to blame that on the age as it is only less than 8.000 miles--- 2001 and maitained regulary - ), .... thanks

hey aam :) heh yeah braking like the Flinstones - you must like cartoons like me lol :)
well Joe,... did check in one of the bmw brochures and it said to be pumped more than 70 times before performing brake fluid flush, but did not stated as on running or none running engine, will have to search for the other book. I know it was listed over the WEB too somewhere (if you do search under "E46 brakes") here is link from BAV AUTO not sure if it is listed there but you can check in the DIY -- BMW Parts and BMW Accessories | Bavarian Autosport........,

" Do I Pump The With My Pressure Pump Hooked Up With Pressure On It Or What ??."
NO - NOT YET CONNECTED !!!! you can do that BEFORE connecting your pressure bleeder and before performing ANY Brake work !

btw on the 1st picture from your brake fluid reservoir I can see that you to have "MISSING" small screw, you can see the holes under the brake reservoir for where the screw is supposed to be ................(my '99 SL don't have it either, the same story in other SL's that I did check .... I asume it is "normal" ...... .

not much time this dayZZ for forums so I will be quick in the replays .... looking for used E39 '02 540 bimmer wagon ........ anyone have one for sale :)
