Hello all - I have a 72 280se 4.5 that the front passenger side caliper will go in and not release the whole way. (brand new calipers all around) They bleed perfectly and if I take a screwdriver and a hammer and tap the pads to spread them apart, it will open and the wheel will spin. Then, I press the brake and it locks again. I have done many brakes and have never seen this. All others are ok - the drivers side rear is a bit tight, but will spin. This car has sat for 7 years and my father-in-law and I are trying to bring it back to life.
My thoughts:
Bleeds fine - no problem with the master cylinder
Opens with a tap - caliper isn't locked

Any help/thoughts will be appreciated.

I believe, sokoloff means collapsed or crimped brake line. It sounds to me like something is not allowing the fluid to flow back from the caliper which is why it's sticking. When you squeeze it back, you are forcing the fluid back through whatever is restricting it, but it appears it can't seem to do it on its own.

Replace the rubber brake hoses,they run from the inner fender to your calipers,you MUST do it everytime you replace a caliper and every six years,regardless of the make of car.They get ateriosclerosis inside,the fluid will go to the caliper but cannot return because the inside is collapsing and blocking off the flow like a blocked artery..Cut one open and you see the hole will only be about 2-3 mm diameter.The outside will look good but that is not important.
Fliuid should be flushed every 2 years with out fail and this prevent further trouble.
The rubber seals on the caliper not only prevent road dirt from getting into the piston but also pull the piston back from the rotor,so there isn't much to force the fluid to return.[:)][:)]

definitely check those rubber hoses! it could be that the caliper is just bad also.. sometimes they are.. the piston could be jamming itself every time if it's a bit loose.. never know.. i've had bad calipers before..
