I'm trying to bleed the brakes on my '85 500SL after re-installing the ABS unit & of course one is seized solid. I know how potentially bad this is but with luck I'll get it out without snapping it.

I know I can get replacements from the main dealer but I would rather avoid having to trail all the way there only to be ripped off price-wise.

What size are the bleed screws & does anyone know where I could get stainless ones in the UK?

I await the helpful replies on size, but instead put in a plug for speed bleeders. I have been using these for the past ten years and would not consider anything else when replacing bleed screws. It makes a one-person bleed an error-free five minute job. Here in the states NAPA carries them as a stock item, but it seems you can order online.

Here is the size chart including metric bleeders:
Speed Bleeder Sizes
Metric

SB6100 # M6 X 1.0 1.13, (28.80)
SB7100S # M7 X 1.0 1.19, (30.22)
SB7100 # M7 X 1.0 1.38, (35.15)
SB8100 # M8 X 1.0 1.28, (35.54)
SB8125# M8 X 1.25 1.10, (27.99)
SB8125L # M8 X 1.25 1.28, (32.54)
SB8125LL M8 X 1.25 1.50, (38.09)
SB1010S # M10 X 1.0 1.23, (31.35)
SB1010 # M10 X 1.0 1.35, (34.44)
SB10125 # M10 X 1.25 1.35, (32.44)
SB1015 # M10 X 1.5 1.35, (32.44)

Thanks PanzerPuff. They look very useful.

According to Speed Bleeder the size is M8 x 1.25 x 38.09.

The price of $28 for 4 is only £18 but the postage is usually the killer.

The size for my 85 300D with ATE calipers is M8x1.25x32mm. The 107 should use same size. I could not find 32mm long bleeders, so bought 25mm. They fitted, but screw in further. Length is not that important. To find your size, why not remove one and try screwing it into an M8 or M10 nut.

Something to note, is that not all bleeder screws use the same taper at end. You need proper ones for your type of caliper.

Another problem, is that some aftermarket screws, although they screw in, seem to have a sloppy thread and are loose. One mechanic said that there are two types of metric - oriental (or american) metric and german metric! He appears to be right in this case.

I would not buy on-line unless from a source that can confirm the screws fit properly in whatever make of calipers you have. Most likely ATE(aka Teves) or Bendix. Best to take one of your bleeder screws along with a nut that matches thread and buy a replacement that matches and has same taper at end. Dealer or on-line genuine mb parts supplier may be best bet! Part number that fits ATE calipers is 0004201755.

Andy:
Right size; these are also on Amazon with free shipping. I don't know if I see the same Amazon as you do across the pond; but it may be worth it if there is no shipping cost.

Well for future reference I can confirm the bleed screws are M8. The two long ones are from the front callipers, the chewed up one between them is from the rear & the shiny new one is one of the replacements.

I got my replacements from Biggred in the UK (£5 for 4 delivered).

The replacement calliper came from Euro Car Parts & cost £61.20 exchange (a bargain). Decent quality too (Pagid). A set of new Pagid pads were £11.70.

All's well that ends well. :grin
