Hello, newbie here. I've got a 1963 220S that I have been rehabilitating with my son. The car has done very well but there is a persistent problem with the brakes. I have isolated the problem to a leaking gasket and-or diaphragm in the booster. (Every other month the brake pedal goes soft and the next time we start the car there is a large white cloud of smoke.) We refill the reservoir and bleed the brakes and the car is good for another couple of months. But this is no way to drive a car.

From what I have been able to determine, there are no more rebuild kits and a new or rebuilt booster cost nearly as much as what I paid for the car.

I am no purist so I was wondering if I couldn't just put in a booster from a different car. There is plenty of room and because this is a remote booster, there would be no messing around with the master cylinder. Has this been done?
What donor car would you recommend?

Hi,
I had the same problem a few years ago - the rubber diaphragm was NLA. I ended up having to get a VH44 booster from an Australian Valiant or Ford and making up an adapter bracket to suit. The pedal was firmer than other finnies I drove but it did work.

If you are in the US, other cars of the 60s that used remote boosters are Volvos, Alfa Romeos, British cars like Triumphs MGs etc. perhaps you could find one for those cars. or a rebuilder.

these don't always go bad , I would take a chance with a used booster. also make sure to rebuild the master cylinder and change all seals. often it is the master cylinder leaking into the booster which causes the problem to begin with
