If you would tell us the point of a question like that, we could probably give you a more-to-the-point answer. An omnibus query gets an answer like I offered.
I'm not trying to pick a fight. We'd like to help, but questions like that are unanswerable.
Hi, I was just reading a review and it said that the w220 used aluminium to make it lighter than the W140, I assumed it was body panels.
" BEHIND THE WHEEL -The unit body platform of the new S-Class is quieter and stiffer than the version it replaced, and extensive use of aluminum parts has trimmed 500 pounds off the car. "
Going to high-strength steel or steel alloy will reduce weight. I'm sure there is more aluminum in the W220 than the W140, but aluminum didn't account for a 500 pound weight saving. Again, there are no aluminum body panels.
The simple way to find out rather than debating it for the next six months is to take a kitchen magnet (like the one that holds up your kids' drawings on the frig) and stick it to the body panels. When it sticks, it's because they are steel. Whatever it doesn't stick to is not steel; it's glass, or rubber, or aluminum.
