This is the plug for the regulator. Could the "green" corrosion be the cause of my intermittent a/c fan-speed?

I already ordered the part from autohausAZ for $350... I'd rather return it...

Doubt it but possible. Give it a good cleaning and see if it fixes the problem.

Can I start the car to test it without putting the whole thing back together? without connecting the vacuum hoses?

This is interesting, my 1991 300 SL-24 does not have a/c but I noticed, especially on position 5 of the fan switch that the fan speed is not constant,it is fast sometimes then slows down then may speed up again, I wondered whether it was voltage/temperature controlled, fan is not noisy or anything, thanks, Jim.
