Basical

Just pour some water via each fresh air grill, and within a few seconds it should drip on the floor. If it doesn't than the drain is / are blocked and you'll need to unclog them, per rowdie's post / RD's picture.
Yes,It's a two person job, one pourer one inspector. It's not a bad idea to start with a little at the top of the windshield and work down to the grilles. There are sometimes other leaks.

Gurus:

I have a knock around 1984 380SL...…….I'd like to correct or hopefully prevent this R107 rust affliction. What's the procedure for removing the black grills????? I assume the grill removal will at least allow a visualization of the R107 rust weak spot?? I apologize for the dumb questions.

Thank you in advance
Mike

No need to remove the grills. Remove the blower cover. If you want to remove the grills they were originally attached with plastic drife rivetet on the engine side. Pop those out and you might be able to pull up and remove. If not remove the lower windshield trim piece.

Usually there is a thin pin in the centre of the nylon grommets you see when you lift the hood 2 each grille. You push out the pin and the grommet comes out. If no pin you can either lever them out or drill them out - probably a 4mm drill is ok as there are holes in the grilles. You can buy the little push- in grommets in any car part place.

Don't want to change the topic on this thread, but all this bulkhead discussion freaked me out, and although i checked my car when i bought it two years ago, i just started to rip mine apart. All is good, but how do i unplug the blower motor? It's an 82 500SL with a cable leading from the motor to a relay of some sort attached to the bulkhead...

From memory it's multiple choice. Unplug the relay and/or the appropriate fuse. Also the wire to the motor is easily removable if you dismantle the cover after removing the whole motor assembly.
