I purchased a 2011 ML350 Bluetec in March. I live in Northern Canada where its not uncommon to have -30c in the winter. It didn't come with a block heater and this is the first diesel I've owned, so I'm wondering what people's opinions/experience are with Mercedes diesel's in the cold. The dealer quoted me around $600 for the parts and installation which is pretty high I think.

That does seem high.
It is an option for Canadian ML Blutecs. Check the price there.
What does the part cost?
The block heaters are not available from factory for US cars.
But I read somewhere that the Blutecs block heater is the same for the E Class Blutec.
Makes sense, right? It's the same engine.
I once bought a replacement for my E Class and paid about $100. bucks a few years ago.
Install envolves removing a plug from engine block, which drains all your coolant, then install heater and replace coolant, route plug wire out to front grill.
should be a $300. job, but what ever is at MB dealers.
It soulds like a job for your indie mechanic.

you have more issues with diesels in cold weather than just a block heater, although that is a good first step.

Since it's your first diesel you need to research/learn about what happens to that fuel in cold weather - gelling, moisture condensation, etc. These issues can be dealt with, but you need to understand what's required.

R u sure it doesnt have a block heater?..mine came standard as a Canadian model
Since you live quite far north, you will find winter diesel in all the stations early in the cold season. Its already arriving at stations here.
All modern diesels have a fuel heater system which warms the fuel.
