I just finished my shocks and springs. Volgland and Bilsteins. I put the new shocks on going by the part number on Bilsteins site. I don't under stand. My stock ones were long shocks on the front, shorts on the rear. The Bilteins were long on the rear , short on the front.Seems wrong.

my part #'s

are F4-BE3-AO57-HO front
F4-BE3-AO58-HO rear this is a complete lowering kit you had found on e-bay. The rear lowered an inch+ but the front is only down 1/2. I know it will lower more in time. I just don't under stand the fronts being the shorter ones now.My E320 has a 10/98 build date. I think they sold me the wrong shocks.

Raymond, good day,

I am one of the diyers here who followed and appreciated your DIY Sticky on shock absorber replacement. The front shocks available on Autohausaz is B36 2154. Is this ok too ? I feel like it's really a hard shock. Thanks !

Did you just do the shocks or replace the coils to drop the ride height?
If you installed the HD shocks without the dropped springs your ride will be stiffer because the travel is less and the valving is tuned Heavy duty.
Coil change or coil and sport or Hd shock change stiffer ride is one of the things you have to accept in the trade off for better handling.
If you did not lower the car with springs, get a set of oem shocks and sell the HD's to a member that is dropping their car with H and R springs they will need the Hd shocks.

six - ack ! the auction was poorly worded and misleading and we both should
have caught it. it states that the shock/spring set is good for years 96-02
which is flawed. sometimes, sellers will just have boilerplate wording but have
slightly different parts depending on the year and application. in this case
the seller only had one set...............which was for 00-02 E320s. the p/n I
posted above are accurate for the 96-99 E320s

Reference these two pages from the Bilstein catalog <attached> as well as
this post on MBWorld

The shocks shouldn't affect your ride height, as it takes around 100# or so to
compress them. Thus, it's the springs which determine ride height nearly all
the time.

Dbl check (if you can see the p/n on the body) and be sure you have the
proper ones F vs R.

I'll have to dig around to see if I have information on part # for Vogtlands. If
you have yours handy, post them.

E430 - that is the proper p/n for my car, but I dont remember if this holds
true because yours is a 430. I liked the ride as I'm more likely to appreciate
slalom vs straight line comfort. The less body roll, the happier I am....all
within reason, of course. So the HDs were not harsh to me....though I must
say that, on the same day, the mod was: from 16 to 18" wheels, wider tires,
and HDs. A month or so later, I went to Vogtland lowering springs, as well
as lowering shocks. Then, for the past 10 mos I was letting things settle
and mixing and matching spring pads to get the right ride height and resolving
front tire rubbing issues (ET31 from E55 w211).

E430 - hey, I happen to have a set of Koni adjustable shocks for my E320. If
you think these will work for you, I'll sell to you. They are too soft for my
tastes....even at heaviest damping. Three settings, soft/med/firm. When I
bought them, I gambled that it would provide the range I liked. The Koni FIRM
is softer than the Bilstein, so I went to Bilstein Sports. Give me a shout if you
are interested. The Konis have approx 500 miles on the rears and about 50 miles
on the front.

Vogland part# is 952085. I checked, it is the correct one. I e-mailed the people on the shocks. Will probably be Tuesday, if they get back to me.

I checked a few times, the shocks are where they belong according to the part #. If I swapped them front to rear they would match the stock ones in length. wonder how that would work?

the important thing is to install the shocks per the recommended installation.
it is less important their location based on shock length. this is because the
manuf can elect to (as they appear to have in this case) valved the internals
appropriate to the weight distribution they are trying to regulate.

what I dont know is.....why there are different shock models for the 00-02.
the cars are very similar so it may be because of weight differences. or, it's
possible that physically, the mounting points are noticeably different.....yet you
seemed to have success installing them as-is, even though they were for a
more recent E320s,

hmmm...

Ohlord, I just changed the shocks and no adjustments in ride height. Too old for that kinda thing, LOL. Where you get the real oem ? Dealer's quote is around $800.

Raymond, I think I am leaning more on the bilstein and if ever, how much you selling it for. Mention it, coz someone might be interested too.

Sorry for delayed response. Was using someone elses laptop.

SB shocks are oe shocks.meaning they meet the specs of the originals.
you can change ride height a bit without hurting the ride just change the pads.
if Ray has a set of adjustable koni's get them and follow his diy.The way he changes shocks and pads is so often they probably never touched the ground before he changed his mind:D
