Well, my e320 V6 gets slightly better milage around town if I don't let her use fifth, ie drive with the selector in "4".

Starting off in second will make the torque converter doo more work and thusly increase your energy losses. Which in turn decreases your milage.

Hmmmm, has anyone done a little study on this??

Here I've been keeping it in "W" and driving with a light foot to see what I can pull off.

I've been consistently averaging 24 to 26 driving normally and keeping a reasonably light foot on it.

This is a mix of about 60% freeway and 40% secondary in the Ventura County part of Southern California.

One fairly long freeway run (the Foothill Freeway to Riverside for those that can relate) I briefly touched the magic 31mpg -- and when we came back to our senses we averaged 27.5mpg keeping the cruise control at 67 mph

Now if y'all think I can improve on that with "S".....

you definitely have my attention!

Why are you driving around SoCal with the Winter Mode On?? Whats the point of always taking off in 2nd gear in a non slippery/non ice condition?- just wondering....

Well I figured that the engine gets the best mileage if I keep RPM low and the engine working without lugging.

If it starts up in second gear and upshifts more rapidly -- well, I was guessing the mileage would be improved.

Hey, what do I know [:D]

I actually do like spirited driving. I just also enjoy the "game" of seeing how consistently and how high I can get and keep the mileage ( particularly with our recent gasoline prices)

OK, what is everyone getting for mileage?

Maybe the "W" setting isn't doing anything - except starting out in second gear - sometimes.

I thought I was getting good mileage, but I'll switch it to "S"....

I have been using W mode for the last week due to the 1.5 feet of snow that fell here.

I find that W works better for driving in snow as it limits the amount of slip to the wheels.

However, my fuel economy has gone up by about 2.0L/100km. This is due to having to use more throttle input to get the car going. I will be switching back to S mode as soon as I can.

very interesting thoughts.

I kind of thought that if you can keep the rpms down and have the engine shift early it might increase MPG. I guess real world expraince proved that wrong.

from what i gather "s" seems to get better MPG.

Thank you all,

Alex
