Greetings forum,
I’ve had many good years of advice from this forum on fixing my 2005 C240 wagon but now I’ve got a sell it “as is”. Cost of repair outweighs the value of the vehicle and I’m not a mechanic.
Q: Is craigslist still the place to sell cars or Hemmings or other forums with high traffic volume? What is THE place now to sell? I’ll read the rules and if I publish to another social media site obviously I’ll link it here. I haven’t sold a car privately since I was in college so looking for advice thank you.

The last three Mercedes I bought were from Craigslist. Unless you have something rare or highly desirable, Craigslist is probably the way to go.

Try to sell it from your place of business.. You don't want some of the riffraff that tolls craigslist coming to your house..

PS.. I buy all of my cars off craigslist.. I make it a point to tell everybody that I'm dealing with " I'll be carrying " and my buddy that's coming with me will also be carrying...

You might try Facebook marketplace. I see a lot of cars posted there. I've not bought or sold car there, but many other things. Being able to see photos and friends of people you are dealing with is a plus.

Traffic on CL has slowed down tremendously after they instituted the $5 fee to post, but that’s still the place I buy and sell my cars. Less traffic and a lot of dealers posting in By Owner section, but I can still find some gems there. Just takes a bit more time.

Actually sold the W203 through an ad on Nextdoor app which was kind of surprising. I also browse/post on Letgo/Offerup/5miles, but they’re usually full of BS. I’m not on Facebook, so that’s out for me.

There's a $5 fee to post now? That's new...when did that happen? And yeah, a lot of dealers are posting in "by owner" because they know that most people view car dealers as scumbag rip-off con-artists (rightly so, usually).

I usually use the "owner" filter. Not perfect, but works well to eliminate most dealers.

You can also post it in the auto parts and wheels section for FREE. Nobody cares.

It was some time last spring, IIRC.

Me, too, and that leaves out the somewhat reputable (if you really could call a used car place that...) dealers. But, it leave the scum who post as individuals and are even worse than those who post in the dealer section.

True. Car posts in those have definitely increased during the last year or so. Pretty sure, however, your occasional buyer doesn't necessarily realize they should be checking there to find a car to buy.

And one more thing I even have a Carfax so I could provide that to the prospective buyer.

Looks nice and clean! What's wrong with it? C240 should be relatively easy to work on.

Once your one on one with a potential buyer then you can tell them about all the details

I've sold four vehicles on CL in less than a week with a short add such as this.. Two of them where sold on the first day
Also, compare other 240s and price yours the lowest.. that's if you want it to go fast..

I did create a FB page and might create an event where people can come view and make an offer in a public place. That sounds interesting to me.
On FB, look for "marketplace" groups in your area. FB groups are much like forums. You have to join the group (sometimes you must be approved by an administrator, but that's usually easy if you just ask). Where I live, we have a marketplace for our neighborhood (it's large - over 1,000 homes) and another for our suburban area, and another for the metro area. The challenge you may have is that if you just joined FB and don't have a bunch of "friends", then people may avoid your ad because that's what scammers look like.

@bobby735, @rudeney , great advice on short ad and FB. So the big question, no one knows of a really good home mechanic in SoCal willing to make the repairs for a reasonable price lol 😉😊
