Are the somewhat pricey "Official New M-B Factory Service DVDs" [the STAR SERVICE] the way to go for this fairly competent, hands on guy? I want to be involved in maintaining my 'classic 95 SL320. Is there another good, competing source? In advance, ThanX!

If you do an internet search, you'll find many MB WIS service manuals that are less expensive.
My B Class had no Star Service manuals available, so the internet was the only way to find any info.

There are for the casual shade tree mechanic other competing sources.
Factory wis procedures,tsb's and more info on your 95 for 20 bucks or so a year.
