Hello this is my first post ever on the internet , so please be gentle , i will take all advise / constructive criticism , that is offered . I will keep this one short as possible
I have a year 2000 ML320 w163 , i am wondering if i can change out the BCM with a second one with out needing it to be re programmed , i have changed the ABS module and pump and did not need to re program it , obviously the part numbers are an exact match for both BCM and the ABS that i installed .
For some back ground i have never owned a benz and my last daily driver was a 1996 hilux LN106 diesel 4x4 so i have not had to deal with such a heavy technologically laden vehicle
thank you in advance for any time taken to read my query

thanks for responding , greatly appreciated , when i googled the part no A 163 545 28 32 it came up as a Body Control Module , When i contacted a Mercedes , the spare parts guy said he could not find a part number to match , possibly it has been re numbered or my search is incorrect . I may be incorrect with what module i am looking at ? maybe this should be my question - where would i go to find what part number is what part ?
if you would like for me to write the symptoms i will , i just dont want to take up too much of peoples time
thank you

You need to describe problems and post faults stored from all control modules. It is not possible to own any modern vehicle without dedicated scanner.
Throwing parts at problems will get expensive and frustrating.

Here is lookup for that part number.

thank you both for responding and giving me your input , valid points from both of
I am so new to this type of automotive tech and mercedes my learning curve has been exponential , Unfortunately our budget has been blown by works done thus far, that what i was going to spend on a scanner has been consumed , as the vehicle no longer travels more than a few km without issues i cant take it anywhere to be scanned and have already wasted money getting someone mobile to it. who gave me no print out or sent an email with the list of error codes, i wont go into my response to this gentleman, lets just say i will not be calling on his services again .
i am now leaning to think it could be a security module as when disconnected the lights windows etc do still work , which had me a little confused but thank you nation wide for your imput i will further research this
thank you witek_m i will have a look now at the link you sent , and your advise about throwing parts at an issue is definately expensive and FRUSTRATING indeed
I will now find a mobile technician who has the equipment and good business practice to give me all fault codes that are pulled up
my symptoms are as follows
intermittant , 1 day i may get 20 to 30 km all good car drives beautifully , other days i will 1km before this
instrument cluster goes hay wire , all gauge needles going up down , all warning lights flashing like christmas tree, beeping constantly , eventuating in trans not going past 1st or 2nd gear like a limp mode, when you've pulled over and shut the car off sometimes it will re start and take off sometimes all good its cleared and you get to your destination , other times it will not start for 15 or so min , and have just noticed it occasionally will show a start error message , again after you disconnect battery fiddle around for awhile it starts runs great but eventually out of no where it all starts again, its becoming dangerous , i dont want to get stuck in an intersection (as has happened), the complete freak out of the cluster is what lead me to think it was possibly a BCM , when i searched for the part number is when i found it on ebay being described as a BCM from an ML320,
Please excuse my ignorance in these system and modules , i sincerely do not want to waste your time , i was hoping it would be a simple yes or no, as i am discovering there are very few simple yes or no mercedes answers or at times logic ,thank you both for your time and patients.
before i go what scanner would you recommend for the 2000 ml320 for around the 250 to 350 price range, obviously i need one as much as you need any other hand tool
cheers

Personally I use Autel line of scanners. For ML AP200.

When you have some time search this forum with terms like AAM, EAM, FBM, "start error"

thanks SocalSam, i was hoping this was the problem , and indeed it was a problem , the previous owner wanted to run a power lead for an anderson plug to the back , so pushed the drain in to use to hole in the body to get the cable into the cabin, i found that when the carpet was wet after it rained and i had washed the car , fixed it , checked all electrical fuses and relays they were ok , but who's to say at some stage there was not a spike in the system due to the water contamination .I have only had the vehicle for approx 6 weeks
thanks for your input very appreciated
cheers

Plot thickens. That should have been part of your original post.
Problem with water intrusion is like Russian waterproof watch. Once water gets in it will never leave.:)

i apologise for not adding that detail , i did read that when i went through the membership process to add everything i have done , please excuse my newbie start to this , i will not allow this to become a habit , i appreciate you are donating your time , knowledge and expierience free of charge , this is something i do not wish to abuse
in between waiting for a scan i will take out the ring around the ignition barrel and check for any wiring issues there
