I was driving my 1996 SL500 and noticed the battery light had come on. I figured the alternator or battery was going out but when I checked the voltage while the engine was running I was showing 15.6 volts. Would this be too high a voltage and mean the regulator is going out? I am afriad to drive the car for fear that it may short some electrical systems.

Check the standing voltage of the battery (car off). If it is low, you may have a dead cel that your alternator is trying to compensate for... But then again, I could be wrong

Car off battery shows 12.5 volts I ran the radio for an hour and tried to start it and it had plenty of power volts dropped to 12.2 after an hour of the radio on.

The output voltage of the alternator should be limited by the regulator to no more than 14.5 volts, I believe. I think you need a new regulator.
