My battery recently died (completely dead, even the power locks didn't work), and I put the key in the ignition but it wouldn't budge. It seems to me like it could be a problem if you were trying to tow the car, because even the steering lock wouldn't release since the key wouldn't turn, so how would you steer it... Does anyome know why it does this?

The car has electric blockade. You need to put a battery in it to release it.
Don't let the tow truck driver to jump the car for it, since there is risk it could mess some electronics on the car.

That or you'd apply power to the jump points under the hood -- WITH THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION -- and then you could put it in and it would turn. As Kajtek1 notes, it requires battery voltage to check the key and release the lock.

Useful reminder: DO NOT EVER CONNECT JUMPER CABLES WITH THE KEY IN THE IGNITION.

You didn't mention whether you got the issue resolved, so I take it that was just a general-knowledge question?

Good luck.
