Friends, i have this thing missing. I have ordered all three parts, but cannot get how it's working. The part N62 is connected to the body - it is clear, but where part N59 goes? I have only idea tha it is connected to the N56 from the opposite side of the part N53, am i correct? Can someone give me directions or make a photo of yours?

Heh I just ordered those parts a few weeks ago because I over-tightened #56 and the shaft broke in the hole of #62 .

#56 fits through the lining - #59 fits on the other side of the lining through #56 keeping it in place. You will see where #62 fits on the body - that is the mount for #56 and holds it. I will take a picture tomorrow if my description is still confusing.

I have yet to find any combination of parts that work together. As long as the panel doesn't fall open I'm ignoring the problem.

Wlb50....well son of a gun.....my #56 is also busted off in #62 . I would like to order the 3 parts. Can't be that expensive. Do you have the MB P/N for the 3 parts in question? (#56 - 59- & 62) Thanks in advance G

I couldn't resist....:devil :eek

Fresh venison from the last hunt, Mossburg 12 GA. 6 shot pump, Elvis decanters with 80 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon. (I'm not too much of a drinker...they're collectables but I do like my Venison) :grin :wink :angel

I think that breakage is pretty common - particularly with this infamous plastic as it ages. When I broke mine I was certain that I would either have to live with it broken or comb the wrecking yards for a new cover. (I'd hate to price out a new cover!)

Just for ducks (what does that mean, anyway?) I went to my friends at the parts counter at MB-Sacramento and to my surprise all 3 parts were available - which tells me there's a whole lot of breaking going on, from Moscow to Sacramento ;-)

Anyway here are the part#s:

129-693-01-56 Button

004-990-52-40 Washer

129-693-00-68 Nut

you really have to be careful tightening these - just a bit snug

whole bill for me was $14.04

I don't remember the part numbers but when I bought my used '98 SL500 while still in California I went about fixing all the minor issues. I went to the dealer and bought the parts for that panel, but they didn't work as a set. I then went to a junk yard and got a set, or part of a set anyhow. Still don't have a working latch and really no longer care.

I'm glad someone was able to get a working combination.

I replaced #56 with a handy button (pic below) that I found at Home Depot. I removed #62 and enlarged the plastic receiver's hole to mate the metal thread of the button's screw and reinstalled it back. IIRC, the button with metal screw cost around $3.

Well I was going to go with Wlb50's solution & go to the dealer but then I saw your solution & thought what the hay....."that'll work".

So here it is: took the female receiver out of it's metal holder in the trunk. Drilled out the threaded plastic nub (it came out very clean & didn't damage the threads)

Bought the first knob with a 1/2 " stud (too short). :eek

Went back to Lowe's got the 3/4" stud ($2.82). Everything fit like a glove & the battery cover is as snug as a bug in a rug! :grin

So Wlb50 & edcarls thanks for the info & solution to my little problem!:grin

Battery panel parts

Ad man, I think you found the correct German made button. Now I need to upgrade my URO button.:laugh
Surely someone has found a combination of parts which work together.

In my case, the dealer (while I was still in California) gave up after selling me the "correct parts" and refunded the money.

It seems to be a problem at such a low level that MB has abandoned working on a solution. There must have been cars that came out of the factory with a set of parts that worked, but when they failed they never created an accurate parts list for that area.

???????????????????

I just gave the correct solution - parts fit. Back on page 1.
