My battery has a colour point indicating the charging status of the battery. Mine is dark, indicating it needs a charge, not surprisingly, since I have not driven it very much during the winter.

The owners manual says, "disconnect the terminals before charging" but is that really necessary? I understand the need to use the correct charger and connecting it correctly, but I don't want to make the car powerless unless absolutely necessary.

Any hints?

personally i dont see a need for it, what you coud do

would be to make a jumper with two aligator clips and attach one end to your pos battery post and the other end to the battery cable,
use a 1amp fuse in the jumper to protect the elctronics of the car if something goes wrong and still have enough power to the car.
i know this is extreme but it would give you peace of mind when jumpstarting w/o losing your settings.

i believe wallmart sells a battery connector that already has the jumper with fuse built in.

i have been meaning to buy one but havent gotten to it.

keep us posted.
