I took the ML to the shop with no answers, yet. They found several codes related to ESP, BAS, and yaw rate sensor, but are not sure which one is causing the problem. Sounds weird.. This is not a dealership, so I am curious if they use the same software.

Here's the question: Is it possible to remove a relay temporarily to drive the ML? What's happening is that the BAS/ESP engages with no warning or lights. My wife freaked out yesterday driving into town.

The import shop mentioned that the ESP module would run $1200 parts / labor. I suggested replacing the Yaw Rate Sensor first, which is the cheaper option. I would put it in myself, but someone mentioned that it would need to be calibrated.

Any suggestions are welcome....

Update

Sorry, I have been away for a while working on my other car. :)

The dealer flashed the ML with no codes. Very strange.... perfect for Halloween...

He mentioned that the steering angle sensor could be the problem, but he was not sure. I noticed in the fuse/relay box there is a blue relay with a GM logo. WTF?? I knew there were a lot of American parts in the ML, but a relay.

That's probably the whole darn problem. The German's and American's inside my relay box are having an argument about who should drive the car, my wife or myself. The issue only occurs when she drives the car. Sorry ladies.

Virginia, my car originally came from Arlington, VA.

Ich liebe VW's.
I don't know if you've resolved your issue yet, but I've come to conclude that other than get rid of the truck, there's no real solution to this ABS/BAS/XYZ/... issue. I probably have had all possible combinations between the three MB vehicles that I have owned and the solutions have been as simple as a brake switch/sensor to replacing the entire steering column. The latter was a last resort thing because my SA was so fed up with this nonsense that he decided he'd push the envelope on my 05 500. Even after all that, I still have the problem. My latest iteration is an older version - the light pops on and when I turn off motor and engage P, it locks the shifter. I have to start motor, turn it off and restart to shift from P. What a bunch of crap. I'd already gone through this a few years back and some electronic modules were replaced. You'd think that would have solved the problem! The truck is driven highways 98%, usually on long trips, never 4-wheeling (maybe that's what I should do!) and I have to deal with this nonsense! Anyway, I'm ranting as usual! There's yet to be a solution to your (our) problem. It's electronic and does not affect the mechanical functionality of any of the components referenced, so just keep on driving. Smash on your brakes hard around a corner and ABS/BAS will work just fine. If they don't, you have a real problem.

This may sound stupid but check the brake fluid level and the sensor that senses it.
My truck was doing the same thing and the red parking brake light never turned on.
